The "72 Wives" (still not virgins) comes from the Hadith, not the Qur'an.

Considering the Qur'an, like the Bible, was written in a time of men who objectified women, I can understand the appeal to the Male (prominent monetary holders) Masses of the time. You want to fill pews and increase the economy of the faith, you have to appeal to the money side of the population.
I read somewhere that if Mohammed were to have created Islam today instead centuries ago, that women would likely be promised "a grand stud in paradise", though only one. Still a bit sexist, but hey, it's a start.
