Leaving size and scary concept of THAT "cute" thing flying, how did they convinced it to eat carrot from hand? Insects are timid creatures and tend to run from anything big enough. This one behaves like a pet.
I think that it is not two nights, but lots and lots of days and carrots love story.

I'm glad you're nowhere near it then.

You do realise they're endangered?

Let go of your fears and stop blindly killing just because you're a scaredy cat. That's one of the human attributes I dislike the most.

I'm not much of a fan of spiders, but I don't go around killing them.

I'm not much of a fan of people, but I don't go around killing them.

another reason I don't like people is evident in some of the comments here, in the vein of " I wonder what it tastes like" It says a lot about a person when that is their first thought...along with the "I'll squash it" comments. bunch of ignoramii.

Weta are beautiful, amazing insects, with a long history and are rightfully considered a national treasure.

Giant weta can't fly

More on the Giant Weta

All Weta are flightless

Weta look like large, flightless versions of their cousins the grasshoppers and crickets....The weta is more primitive than the tuatara and so old, it has outlived the dinosaurs! In fact, the weta has been around for nearly 200 MILLION YEARS! Although they are preyed upon by lizards, tuatara and moreporks, in the absence of efficient predators weta became large and flightless occupying niches similar to mice elsewhere in the world. The giant weta is even the same size as a mouse.

Yep, quite amazing!

The WETA is an awesome critter... the largest I saw while living in UnZud was in the Musueum.. and this female was about 10 inches long.

One more thing about the Weta is that during their mating season the Female becomes aggressive and will bite.. the bite is equal to being stung by a large wasp and pains for some time afterwards.. I found that out when I was bitten by one near my front door.

Beautiful Beasties they are.

I have to agree with some of the other people in this thread. He is really cute and I personally can not stand most bugs.
I absolutely detest flies and roaches but this thing is cool looking.

That thing is huge and I bet it could make the biggest of men scream like school girls!

It actually kind of looks like a grasshopper or something. It seems friendly enough, if it lets people pick it up and what not.

Would I hold it? Depends how much you pay me.

Very cool though.

finally, irrefutable, absolute proof of an alien life form.
just ain't no arguing with this evidence.
shouldn't this be in the ufo/alien branch?

It looks disgusting lol.

If it can eat a whole carrot, imagine what it would do to your finger.

What a beastly juggernaut lookin' bug. The cerci looks like a giant stinger, even though it is not. Imagine a swarm of those crawling through your crops.

I thought the heteropteryx may have been the heaviest:

Just make sure the Weta doesn't run out of carrots

More giant bugs *

Peace,
spec

It looks like maybe a second cousin to a common cricket, or maybe a cricket mole from the US. It'd make great fishbait if you're able to find a fish big enough to take it.
