Either the ones who went in are a minority of students who like the regime or they aren't students.

Probably paramilitary dressed as students.

Most students (young people) hate the regime and love the west.

Maybe we can stop debating which forum this goes in, and just post here.

Might escalate... we need to wait and see.

Not that it makes much difference but are the 8 embassy workers taken hostage local or British? I thought all British embassy staff fled already some days ago.

Good point, and although it should not make a difference, it would.

Good question. Think about this for a moment. Under international law violation of an embassy can be considered as an act of war. Now if the embassy was closed and manned by a caretaker staff of locals, this wouldn't apply. So I wonder what is the status of the UK embassy and were UK citizens taken hostage? If it can be proven that "paramilitaries" disguised as students did take the embassy, what will the UK's response be?

Lets be honest, the regime in Iran has never forgiven us for supporting the Shah and offering shelter to disaffected Iranians back in the 70's.

Thoughts to those currently kidnapped (and probably thinking the worst).

That was my thought as soon as I heard this too.

Sad to say it should not make a difference

But it makes all the difference in the world really.

If the hostages are indeed british nationals, I think those responsible have not thought very far ahead, or aren't thinking rationally, or are looking for an overt military response from the UK.

And I'm not sure which option would be worse

To be honest mate Sky News barely shows anything one Breaking News, it's usually the same crap they had "breaking" a few hours before. RT is a channel up on freeview, it's far better imo... except when Alex Jones is on lol.

Maybe this is how it all kicks off? NATO tries to rescue the hostages and next thing you know Iranian military attack NATO and WW3 is here.

Don't underestimate NATO's stupid actions. We know they wanna get this war started already, they just need any reason to make it seem like Iran was at fault.
