Russian Navy to carry out exercise in Mediterranean

A division of Russian Navy ships, headed by The Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft-carrier of the Northern Fleet, has come to an agreement with the Greek military about exercises in the Mediterranean Sea.

The exercises are to begin on the 6th of January, a spokesman for the Greek Central Headquarters reports.

No they didn't. They sent a few destroyers. The aircraft carrier will arrive in the next few days.

After a lot of thought, its clear that there will be no peace. Clear that greed of war will triumph over humanity. Report: Russian naval force arrives at Syria port in 'show of solidarity'

A large Russian naval force arrived at the Syrian port city of Tartus, the French AFP news agency reported on Sunday, in what the regime of President Bashar Assad is calling a show of "friendship."

Last November, a Syrian news agency reported that Russian warships were planned to arrive at Syrian territorial waters, indicating that the move represented a clear message to the West that Moscow would resist any foreign intervention in the country's civil unrest.

They didn't send any destroyers or any warships. The reports of the warships in November was pure hype and media speculation by the likes of Debka. The only Russian warship in the Mediterranean at the time was exercising with NATO assets off Italy. It returned to the Black Sea Fleet after the exercise. It was the same with the reports of the Russian aircraft carrier a month ago in the Mediterranean. Invented journalistic non-sense that took on a life of its own.

A Russian Admiral (Admiral Valentin Selivanov) was quick to point out that there were no warships currently deployed to Syria during November.

Admiral Valentin Selivanov revealed.

"In Tartus now there aren't any our ships. There is only our floating workshop and storage platform. A month ago also there came the Black Sea Fleet patrol ship "Smetlivy", but she has already returned to Sevastopol."

If they were conducting military exercises with Syria then that would be the case. They were simply making a port visit to replenish stocks. Prior to that the Russians were exercising with Greek forces (NATO). The Task Force ships have also made ports of call in France (NATO) and Spain (NATO) and replenished stocks. They are due in Spain (Ceuta) in the next few days. None of those NATO countries would be hosting and exercising with them if they were angry at a simple Syrian port visit. Russia needs the port and facilities at Tartus in order to support their commitment to international anti-terrorist/pirate ship deployments in the Gulf of Aden Horn of Africa. In order to keep it they have to play the game with the Assad regime and make a token visit. Without it they would have to find costly alternatives or have all their vessels transit into the Black Sea.

The Severomorsk transited through Syria after an anti-pirate patrol last year.

Russian naval group wraps up Med drill

A Russian naval group, led by the Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft carrier has completed an exercise in the central Mediterranean to practice anti-aircraft missile and artillery drill and antisubmarine warfare.

The task force consisting also of the Baltic Fleet corvette Yaroslav Mudry and the Black Sea patrol boat Ladnyput to sea on December 6, 2011.
