There are contests to either the entire oil field or partial oil field.. right now Ireland and the UK have already given contracts for oil exploration/extraction .. as far as I know, besides pissing a lot of people off, no one has directly challenged them.

That is strange because it it will take some time before the UN will grant anyone the rights to the oil.

Thanks for your contribution Rockpuck and ignorant_ape.
It sounds logical to me, that If Britain is closest by, they should be granted the claim.

I should clarify: Ireland has the best claim to the oil, not the rock. The rock is not the middle of the oil field, it's at the very northern head. The ROCK comes into question because Denmark and Britain believe their territorial rights extend FROM the rock, not TO the rock.. meaning they literally own everything within 200+ miles from the rock its self. Britain had to relinquish it's "official" territorial claim of the island and submit to the UN its own proposal for ownership of the entire plateau.

Indeed the hypothesized oil field comes within 70 miles of Donegal coastline. The field extends North toward Scotland, and north toward Iceland. Hence Iceland says they don't care about the rock, but that no one can claim the entire oil field..

Ireland and the UK thus have agreements to begin drilling and exploration .. Ireland has contract to the West of Kerry to North to Donegal .. The UK west of the Hebrides Islands.

The biggest problem being that the field extends so far west, nearly 800+ miles, that no one can possibly claim the entire thing.. without some outlandish claim.
