I've read this book and come to realize that some of the things that they practise in this book could be used in today’s modern era, the figure of Big Brother could relate well with our modern government and some of the associations they have set up the ideology of the government destroying our history and replaceing it with there own is very possible and is well shown in this book. personally i belive since the book was published in 1949 this book was a clear warning from the author George Owell.

-what is your take on the books presintation of a totalitrian society that was meant as a warning to those of the mdern era?

I would say it's without doubt a warning.

Problem is, the British government seem to be using it as a "How To" manual

Not only the Britan goverment, it's in use in quite a few more places than that considering to this day how little we know about our own history besides what our goverment tells us about all world powers would have to be inagrement with keeping to the stories.

Welcome to the 1984 section of the Rabbit hole. It was a warning and a prophecy it seems.

Pretty astounding that it was just a book of fiction at it's inception.

Yes, I believe it is a warning.

The first thing I think when I read this thread is that you are CIA netting thought criminals. If you read about Orwell and his life, where he worked,it is a warning. It is crazy how accurate he was.

I agree it is both and we are living in these times of a mixture of Brave New World and 1984. A pity really but the rich do as the rich want and utimately that is what society we will always live in (unless you are rich).

Engame is a good doc, covering this subject...

It really is true, we do live in 1984 right now... Except everybody carries the spy devices by choice, to fit into society...

The power is in the proles!!!

Yeah I didn't read the book in highschool (they gave us Brave New World instead) but did manage to pick it up around 2003 or so and I was amazed at how accurate it was when mirrored to our society. I think parts of both 1984 and Animal Farm are used today out in the open and people accept it. Sometimes fiction works better than non fiction in explaining certain processes; metaphors are great ways of gettiing your point across.

Animal Farm was supposed to be about Communism (Socialism on the extreme) and 1984 was supposed to be about Fascism (Capitalism on the extreme) I think.

It does bring up a lot of other questions.

I mean, did the Germans really start WW2? The victor always writes the history. Are the "terrorists" of today the Emmanuel Goldstein of the book?

His theories of perpetual war certainly seem to be becomming a reality.

Also you could equate Newspeak with the spin and rubbish that politicians come out with.

So I guess the question is... do we revolt against it and stay "free" or do we accept that WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Animal Farm yes!!

My stepdad had dual-book George Orwells 1984 and Animal Farm... I read those back to back, and holy crap Orwell was a very accurate on these books compared to the times we live in now...

Animal Farm really covered the propaganda machine well... from changing the meanings of laws and words, to the creators of the laws being above the laws themselves

He also talks about never ending consumerism, and the blowing up of infrastructure for profits in rebuilding. I vaguely remember a part of people burning goods for the sole purpose of being able to remake and sell those same goods or something.

'The Iron Heel' by Jack London is another book that is prophetic.Same as 'Farenheit 451' by Ray Bradbury. Both are just as good as 1984.

That was "perpetual war" and the destruction of resourses.

I figured I got something mixed up lol. It's been a while, maybe it's time I buy it again (gave my copy to the public library) and give it another read.

I've always seen it as a prediction to our ever evolving Brave New World.
Authors of the books(replied above) knew what was going on, some even participated.

I read (taken with a grain of salt) that Orwell was either a Freemason or connected with the illumanti in some way, but that he despised their methods and wanted to make the public aware of what was to come (both written around the 1940's or so) in the future.

Don't forget about "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card, maybe it's a prediction or maybe it's going on now, who knows?
