One thing the book is good for is dispelling the myths about Pirates - talk about a hard life! Very few achieved much through piracy - short term gain soon turned into long term torment! Obviously though there are exception like Sir Henry Morgan (sheer genius IMO making the nuns and monks first up the walls at Panama and absorbing the cannon fire for them!).

The best book is A General History of the Pyrates en.wikipedia.org... written by a still unknown pseudonymous author, generally guessed to have been Defoe.

The entire book was a political hot potato at the time. Not because it was a bunch of bs, but that it exposed the truth exemplified by the pirates of Somalia today: there can never be piracy without government collusion. Where can these pirates sell their stolen booty?

The book i have actually touches on this version and explains a few other hypothesis. I will definitely dig it out tonight and see what i can find. It is years since i read it but my ailing memory seems to recall the theory that Captain Johnson was actually one of the famous pirates himself (rather than Defoe) but does also show a few other theories.

It is a quality publication and shreds the myths surrounding many (in)famous pirates and their acts. Most were basically pretty damn useless to be honest!
