BBC NEWS
The BBC's correspondent in Iraq, Paul Wood, says attacks on Iraq's new police force are a common tactic for insurgents in Iraq, who view them as collaborators.

Its been less than a week where the fighting in Najaf has ended. And now the fighting seems to have moved towards Kirkuk, "a hotbed of anti-Iraq activity". Could this turn out to be another Vietnam?

Trust me, the Kurds do not like being associated with Iraq, Turkey, Iran, or Syria, but want Kurdistan.

This is not a good development as the Peshmerga we hope to keep on our side.

Are the troops now concentrating on the northern sector of Iraq and trying to bring it under some control? Now that the stand off at the shrine has stopped maybe they should has the clerics to help them out.

Insurgents' actions already take on predictable pattern of creating public and private 'fronts.' Fallujha, Najaf, Sadr City, are all public fronts. Concerted effort is made to prevent oil from leaving country and that effort draws much less public reaction and that is private front.
