Not smart on the part of the police. If it were done at my cities OWS, there would have been problems as we have help from the Kentucky State Militia.

America is just a few steps away from a police state. These are nonviolent protesters just camping out in the house, and they send a big team battle sized squad of militarized police? Think about that, 25 cops with assault rifles and pistols to deal with people who were seen "dancing", and placed some banners with slogans in the window. That is completely insane.

Things changed dramatically by Sunday afternoon, when local media reported that more than 25 commandos armed with assault rifles staged a raid on the building, rushing in to find just eight protesters who’d stayed the night.

Officers say they waited until the crowd was a manageable size before the tactical team of about 20 went in. Protesters told News 14 Carolina police were out of line with the force they used.

I do not understand why one would need a tactical team to clear a building that's been abandoned for decades just because some Occupy people took it over....

Placing traps in buildings? I'd like to see one documented case of this. Do they put a bucket of boiling oil above a door, like it's a medival castle? Do they scatter bear-traps in their living room? Do they cut a hole in the floor, put spikes in the bottom, and put a rug under it? That's such a retarded thing to use a justification for showing up like it's a warzone.

Well, the city of Chapel Hill had to spend that Federal money it is given every year. The police department probably got some new "toys" and wanted to try them out! They also put GPS equipment on all the city buses at enormous expense! Chapel Hill is a small town! How often do you suppose a bus got lost in this town?

Oh! The schools had to lose some of their foreign language and arts programs, and several teachers, but..we know where our buses are!

It's plausible - we all know these protestor's favorite movie was Home Alone. But, seriously, this is Chapel Hill - the police don't really have alot to do. They never get to show "what they're made of" and this was their chance to act like tough guys. Pathetic.

I especially like how they appear to be carrying full combat loads. Incredible.

Either they saw a good real life training opportunity-
Or an intentional show of force to send a message to future Occupiers in that area-
Or... That particular commando team has been bored to tears lately.

Whatever the case, what's next. APCs? Tanks? Obviously using the minimum force necessary to control the situation and accomplish the mission was not something that they considered.

Me, I opt for the show of restraint tactics like the Portland police have displayed lately.

Because honestly, this country is about one shot fired away from this turning into something entirely different.

2000 angry protesters = leave them alone they will get hungry and leave

500 angry protesters = we need 1300 officers to arrest and subdue as long as we get overtime

8 peaceful protesters = lets get in there and show em what we're made of and get it done so we can get to the Waffle House
