Arnold Schwarzenegger saw communism as a kid growing up in Styria? Some Austrian historians don't think so. Please read:

VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- Austrian historians are ridiculing California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for telling the Republican National Convention that he saw Soviet tanks in his homeland as a child and left a "Socialist" country when he moved away in 1968.

Trying to find other sources to corroborate.

As most political speeches such as this are practically written in lawyer-speak, I suspect Arnold's exact words can be interpreted in many ways. Remember when Clinton said "I did not have a sexual relationship"? All politicians give themselves manuevering room. That's why so many are purposefully ambiguous.

Ambiguous? Arnald said he remebers seeign tanks in the streets.. and seeing communisim first hand when he left. He said this when there was no tanks in the streets and years after soviet occupation. saying that you didnt have a sexual relationship is at least a half truth depending on interpritation. Arnolds is either a lie or a halusination.

Sticking your hoo hoo dilly in some intern's mouth is "sexual relations" now matter HOW you define the term, hehe....

Likewise, I don't think there's any other way to interpret the Governator's words either....

Try that kind of double speak with your significant other and see how well that flies.

But then again it would seem that both parties are masters of the art of BS, embellishment and half-truths.

Who doesn't think "Nixon was a breathe of fresh air?"

His whole speech will read like a joke in 100 years. I'd imagine it's authenticty will be questioned by "girlie men" alone.

How come people don't seem to understand that it doesn't matter who it is.....if someone in the political spotlight says something news worthy...someone will debunk it....doesn't matter who it is.

C'mon Otts, let's deny ignorance together.

From the story you cited:

"It's a fact -- as a child he could not have seen a Soviet tank in Styria," the southeastern province where Schwarzenegger was born and raised, historian Stefan Karner told the Vienna newspaper Kurier.

This criticism is absurd. Arnold didn't say that he saw Soviet troops in Styria; on the contrary, he made it clear that he was talking about the Soviet zone:

When I was a boy, the Soviets occupied part of Austria. I saw their tanks in the streets. I saw communism with my own eyes. I remember the fear we had when we had to cross into the Soviet sector.

So what exactly is the point of the story?

Why will the conspiracy crowd believe anything the media says without question?

Dig deeper. Deny ignorance.

Does it really matter what Arnold says anymore? After calling certain people "girlie men" he should have lost all credibility and respect with people in this country. How can he be taken seriously now? Arnold was a joke before he took office, and his statements at the RNC just prove that assumption.

What exactly does that have to do with anything Jazzerman?

The A.P. lies in a news story; a lie so stupid that if anyone spent 4 seconds looking they could figure it out.

Otts quotes that story as if it were true.

And you now say "Does it really matter what Arnold says anymore".

WTF?

Does it matter to you at all that the press is lying?

I'll bet you would care more if their lies made Kerry look bad...

Aided and abetted by the media.
I even suspect the WeatherChannel of being less than honest.

"I bet you would care more if their lies made Kerry look bad..." The real question here is...what are you on about? When did I say anything here about Kerry? Perhaps you have not seen my signature. Oh my god that is seriously disturbing my friend...

Ok, so the AP lied? Maybe they did. Maybe Arnold meant nothing by what he was saying. Again, what does that have to do with my post? All I was trying to say is that by Arnold's own words, calling people "girlie men", should discredit him completely. If the AP lies then they should be dealt with just like any other news agency that lies, but that does not excuse the fact that by Arnold's own admission he is offending people in more ways than one. Would you like to be called a "girlie man" by a Governor? That is an unwarranted attack on gender and sexuality, and by doing so it discredits him completely.

Of course, I know that you die hard Arnold fans think he can do no wrong...or is it Bush...I don't know...

As far as I am aware, it was the Czechs and then the British who occupied Styria.

The British zone of occupation was mainly the southern part of Austria including Eastern Tirol, Carinthia and Styria. The British Forces Network maintained radio stations in Graz, Vienna and Klagenfurt.

Also, didn't the allies leave Austria in 1955? Wasn't Arnold born in 1947? So that would have made him 8 by the time the Allies left.

For those who are too young to remember, there was once on "Saturday Night-Live," a skit that poked fun at Arnold Schwartzenegger, including his thick Austrian accent. The two actors laid it own pretty thick with the macho rhetoric which included references to "girlie men."

Schwarzenegger exhibits a reflexive wit when he uses the terms used by the very left leaning "Saturday Night" cast to ridicule him in a call to action to the Democrats of his state.

Only the petty and the concrete can fault Schwarzenegger for getting as much mileage out of this line as possible. I have never been a big fan of Arnold, but you have to admit, he is a self-made man who has demonstrated to the chronic critics of America that America is still, as it has always been, the land of opportunity. Arnold demonstrates why immigrants risk their lives daily to get a chance to come here to realize their dreams.

Grady, would you support Arnold as President of the USA should the bill be passed to allow immigrants the opportunity to run for it?

I don't believe that I would because I don't believe than naturalized citizens should serve as President, but I would have to see whom he ran against to say absolutely for sure.

The effort to change the Constitution will never pass, because changes to the Constitution are difficult enough to change. Given the fact that any such effort to effect such a change in the near future would be a blatant attempt to change the Constitution for the sake of one man. And that one man is so thoroughly despised by the left as to guarantee that the ratification could never occur.

Everyone should file this fear in the circular file.
