Although there is no solid piece of evidence that proves alien life exists, i feel if we collect all the little bits of information and put it together it paints a bigger picture..

Lets have a little look at what science has found so far...

Signals received from space

The WOW signal

On August 15th, 1977, a signal was received at the Big Ear radio observatory in Ohio. Jerry Ehman a volunteer spotted the pattern on the paper logs circled the data and wrote “Wow!” in the margin.

The radio telescope was observing space as part of the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program.

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) is the collective name for a number of activities people undertake to search for intelligent extraterrestrial life. Some of the most well known projects are run by the SETI Institute. SETI projects use scientific methods to search for intelligent life on other planets. For example, electromagnetic radiation is monitored for signs of transmissions from civilizations on other worlds.[1][2] The United States government contributed to early SETI projects, but recent work has been primarily funded by private sources.

en.wikipedia.org...

The signal came from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, and lasted seventy-two seconds at about 1420.456 MHz before it faded away

Seventy-two seconds also happened to be the exact length of time it would take for the Earth to rotate the Big Ear through a signal from space

To this day it remains a mystery and has never been heard since..
wiki page for wow signal

2003 SETI signal

In 2003 another signal was picked up by SETI, this time the massive radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, picked it up.
It came from a spot between the constellations Pisces and Aries. Curiously, the signal is at one of the frequencies that hydrogen, the most common element, absorbs and emits energy. Some astronomers believe that this is a very likely frequency at which aliens wishing to be noticed would transmit.

Link to article from new scientist in 2004

there is also a good chance the signal is from a never-seen-before natural phenomenon. For example, an unexplained pulsed radio signal, thought to be artificial in 1967, turned out to be the first ever sighting of a pulsar.

Mars

A wealth of 'evidence' comes from our nearest neighbor Mars. We have to bear in mind, it is the most extensively studied planet in our solar system and the only one we have scientific equipment on the surface, relaying information back to Earth. (mars rovers)

In 1976 tests performed on Martian soil samples by NASA's Viking landers hinted at chemical evidence of life. One experiment mixed soil with radioactive-carbon-labelled nutrients and then tested for the production of radioactive methane gas.
The test reported a positive result. The production of radioactive methane suggested that something in the soil was metabolising the nutrients and producing radioactive gas

The two Viking spacecraft each carried four types of biological experiments to the surface of Mars in the late 1970s. These were the first Mars landers to carry out experiments to look for biosignatures of life on Mars. The landers used a robotic arm to put soil samples into sealed test containers on the craft. The two landers were identical, so the same tests were carried out at two places on Mars' surface, Viking 1 near the equator and Viking 2 far enough north to see frost in winter.

en.wikipedia.org...

Also much evidence suggests that water once existed or still currently is on Mars..

Liquid water is necessary for known life and metabolism, so if water was present on Mars, the chances of it having supported life may have been determinant. The Viking orbiters found evidence of possible river valleys in many areas, erosion and, in the southern hemisphere, branched streams.

en.wikipedia.org...

Researchers at the American space agency made the discovery after the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit became stuck in wet ground on the red planet earlier this year. Astronomers have become excited by the latest discovery, which they say proves that water favourable for life formed on the red planet more recently than previously thought.

The Times

When water flows over dirt on Earth, there are certain characteristics left in the ground that follow. These structures left in the dirt are seen in satellite images of Mars surface, leading scientists to believe that liquid water used flow on the surface.

Good ATS thread from TupacShakur on evidence of water on mars.

This thread from 2008 shows images taken from Mars that show anomalies in the shapes of rocks.

These include skulls/bones/body parts of critters and alien beings and parts of what seem to be mechanical contraptions owing to their very odd shapes. There is even an object that resembles an Uzi type machine pistol with an ammo box lying close by! Notice the shine of this ‘box’ that seems to have a greater degree of reflection than rocks in the surrounding area. Could it be metallic?

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Personally i dont buy much into these type of images as they are circumstantial rather than scientific.. but they potentially do add weight to the theory..

The infamous Mars meteorite.

The ALH84001 meteorite was found on December 1984 on Antarctica, by members of the ANSMET project; the meteorite weighs 1.93 kilograms (4.3 lb).[26] The sample was ejected from Mars about 17 million years ago and spent 11,000 years in or on the Antarctic ice sheets. Composition analysis by NASA revealed a kind of magnetite that on Earth, is only found in association with certain microorganisms

Another one..

The Nakhla meteorite fell on Earth on June 28, 1911 on the locality of Nakhla, Alexandria, Egypt.[30][31] In 1998, a team from NASA's Johnson Space Center obtained a small sample for analysis. Researchers found preterrestrial aqueous alteration phases and objects of the size and shape consistent with Earthly fossilized nanobacteria

On this second sample, a large dendritic carbon content was observed. When the results and evidence were published on 2006, some independent researchers claimed that the carbon deposits are of biologic origi

One more..

The Shergotty meteorite, from India..Certain features in its interior suggest to be remnants of biofilm and their associated microbial communities.

Jupiters and saturns Moons

In 2001 NASA scientists suggest Jupiters moon Europa's red tinge is caused by frozen bacteria?

The red tinge of Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, could be caused by frozen bits of bacteria. Their presence would also help explain Europa's mysterious infrared signal. Europa is mostly frozen water, but it absorbs infrared radiation differently to how normal ice does.

www.spacedaily.com...

In 2003, Italian scientists hypothesised that sulphur traces on Europa might be a sign of alien life. The compounds were first detected by the Galileo space probe, along with evidence for a volcanically-warmed ocean beneath the moon's icy crust.

The sulphur signatures look similar to the waste-products of bacteria

new scientist

Europa is one of the prime candidates for life in our solar system.

cris cross patterns on the surface, have led Scientists to theorize for years, that an ocean could be hiding beneath Europa's icy surface. One that even contains oxygen and is heated by the internal battle of gravity between jupiter and its moons. It is estimated that Europa has twice the amount of water as earth. Hydrothermal vents created from such heat could provide the essential ingredients for life, although it would most likely resemble the extreme microbes that thrive around Earth's hot underwater vents.

We also have Titan

(Artist representation of NASA's Huygens probe which detected what looked like liquid methane on the surface)

Scientists are taking a closer look at this Saturn moon and finding more and more potential building blocks for very basic life there, its thick atmosphere is rich in compounds that often mark the presence of living organisms.

IO

Jupiter’s moon Io is one of the few solar system moons to support an atmosphere, and it contains complex chemicals promising for life. Volcanism on the moon also makes it warmer than many others.. another good sign.

Enceladus

When the Cassini probe flew through one of Enceladus' icy plumes of water in 2008, it detected carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen -- all excellent elements for aspiring carbon-based life forms.

Also NASA's Cassini spacecraft has recently discovered the best evidence yet for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn's moon.

Callisto

some scientists believe there could be a salty ocean under the surface, mixed with internal heat and decaying radioactive materials, it could harbour life.

Please follow this LINK to a thread i made some time ago, which looks at the individual planets and moons, and the evidence and possibility that they harbor life. If you dont know much about this subject, i suggest you take a quick look as you will be surprised at the solid candidates that have the necessary ingredients.

Venus

Scientists suggest, Venus may have been the first rocky inner planet to develop warm oceans and a mild climate.

Research suggests that the formation of clouds could have slowed the development of the planet's runaway greenhouse effect, allowing Venusian oceans to survive for some two billion years or more. Hence, for roughly half of its lifetime, Venus could have been a habitable planet with liquid water.

The Venus Express satellite has detected large amounts of hydrogen and oxygen escaping into space from the Venusian atmosphere; more specifically, two molecules of hydrogen for every one molecule of oxygen. Sound familiar? It should. Liquid water

Water is thought to be a crucial ingredient for the evolution of carbon-based life forms, making the existence of standing water on Venus at some point in history appealing to astrobiologists studying the origin of life in the solar system.

link

Also in 2002, Chemical hints of life were found in old data from Venus probes and landers.

Life in Venus' clouds may be the best way to explain some curious anomalies in the composition of its atmosphere, claimed University of Texas astrobiologists in 2002.

The researchers' suggested solution to this conundrum is that microbes live in the Venusian atmosphere

The Drake Equation

N = the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which communication might be possible;
R* = the average rate of star formation per year in our galaxy
ƒp = the fraction of those stars that have planets
ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets
ƒℓ = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop life at some point
fi = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop intelligent life
ƒc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space
L = the length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.

Radio astronomer Frank Drake developed the Drake equation so he could estimate the number of planets harboring intelligent life in the galaxy by taking into consideration the factors listed above. A rigorous estimate using the Drake Equation was implemented in 2001, which also took into consideration the number of planets that are in the habitable zone (The habitable zone is an area around a star were water is in liquid form, temperature is ideal, and photosynthesis is possible). The results found that hundreds of thousands of life-bearing planets statistically should exist. It also suggested that a habitable planet like the Earth should exist just a few hundred light years away.
link

The last estimate I read suggested the total number of known extrasolar planets, or exoplanets, is around 645.
And we are still finding more regularly.. with 50 new planets found in September this year..

European astronomers have discovered 50 new planets beyond our solar system, including 16 which are a similar size to Earth.

Daily Mail

Obviously with constraints on the size of the threads and the sheer wealth of little tidbits of scientific 'evidence' i cannot include it all here, but i can assure i have barely touched the tip of this iceberg with this..

UFO's

I would like to add this, although not scientific proof in any way but something I consider relevant and going a little of topic to UFO's rather than just 'life', we have many NASA astronauts that have claimed to have seen UFO's

Major Gordon Cooper

Major Gordon Cooper told the tracking station at Muchea (near Perth Australia) that he could see a glowing, greenish object ahead of him quickly approaching his capsule.

Donald Slayton

Donald Slayton, a Mercury astronaut, revealed in an interview he had seen UFOs in 1951

Joseph Walker

On May 11, 1962 NASA pilot Joseph Walker said that one of his tasks was to detect UFOs during his X-15 flights. He had filmed five or six UFOs during his record breaking fifty-mile-high flight in April, 1962.

Robert White

On July 17, 1962 Major Robert White reported a UFO during his fifty-eight-mile high flight of an X-15. Major White reported: "I have no idea what it could be. It was grayish in color and about thrity to forty feet away." Then according to a Time Magazine article, Major White exclaimed over the radio: "There ARE things out there! There absolutely is!"

Eugene Cernan

Eugene Cernan was commander of Apollo 17. In a Los Angeles Times article in 1973 he said, about UFOs: "...I've been asked (about UFOs) and I've said publicly I thought they (UFOs) were somebody else, some other civilization."

Ed White and James McDivitt

In June 1965, astronauts Ed White (first American to walk in space) and James McDivitt were passing over Hawaii in a Gemini spacecraft when they saw a weird-looking metallic object. The UFO had long arms sticking out of it.

James Lovell and Frank Borman

In December 1965, Gemini astronauts James Lovell and Frank Borman also saw a UFO during their second orbit of their record-breaking 14 day flight. Borman reported that he saw an unidentified spacecraft some distance from their capsule.

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin

According to the NASA Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the Aliens have a base on the Moon and told us in no uncertain terms to get off and stay off the Moon. According to un-confirmed reports, both Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin saw UFOs shortly after that historic landing on the Moon in Apollo 11 on 21 July 1969.

Maurice Chatelain

In 1979 Maurice Chatelain, former chief of NASA Communications Systems confirmed that Armstrong had indeed reported seeing two UFOs on the rim of a crater.

He also said he believes they come from Titan, which is mentioned in this thread above.

Add to those the thousands of reports from other credible witnesses including Airline pilots, military officials and even U.S Presidents..

Ronald Reagan

Both of Reagan’s UFO sightings occurred when he was the 33rd Governor of California (1967 – 1975). The first occurred on the night that Reagan was invited to a party that actor William Holden was having in Hollywood. A number of key personalities were invited. Two of them, comedian Steve Allen, and actress Lucy Ball both told the story of Reagan’s UFO encounter.

The other Reagan sighting occurred in 1974 just before Reagan ended his second term as governor. The story was told by Air Force Colonel Bill Paynter who became the pilot of Reagan’s Cessna Citation jet plane following his retirement from the Air Force

Jimmy Carter

The Jimmy Carter UFO Incident is the name given to an incident in which Jimmy Carter (US President 1977-1981) reported seeing an unidentified flying object while at Leary, Georgia in 1969.

en.wikipedia.org...

There have also been rumors and conspiracy theories for years that President Dwight Eisenhower met with alien visitors in 1954 in a hastily arranged trip.

Then add the thousands of eye witness reports from members of the general public of sighting and even contact..

Personally one of the best IMO..

The Rendlesham Forest incident.

The Rendlesham Forest Incident is the name given to a series of reported sightings of unexplained lights and the alleged landing of a craft or multiple craft of unknown origin in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, England, in late December 1980, just outside RAF Woodbridge, used at the time by the U.S. Air Force. Dozens of USAF personnel were eyewitnesses to various events over a two- or three-day period.

en.wikipedia.org...

Then when we look back at ancient sightings and incidents including in the bible..

Ezekiel 1:4 I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal,

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Cave paintings and renaissance art..

We also have Ancient and indigenous people from around the world that talk about men coming from the sky in ships, including many creation stories from every corner of the globe..

One good example comes from the Dogon Tribe in Africa...

The myths of the Dogon tribesmen of Mall, West Africa, contain astronomical knowledge which the native people could have neither learned by themselves nor guessed.

Dogon legends speak of Jupiter's four moons and Saturn's rings, which were not seen by human beings until the invention of the telescope.

They speak of the star Sirius and of a pair of invisible companions. One of them circles Sirius every fifty years, the legends declare, and is made of a metal that is the heaviest thing in the universe.

Astronomers have discovered that such an object (called "Sirius-B") does exist but only the most sophisticated and sensitive instruments -- unavailable, of course, to the Dogons -- can detect it.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Even Alexander The Great had a UFO sighting..

The first recorded incident regarding Alexander the Great and UFO's was recorded in 329BC. Alexander decided to invade India and was attempting to cross the river Indus to engage the Indian army when "gleaming silver shields" swooped down and made several passes over the battle.

These "gleaming silver shields" had the effect of startling his cavalry horses, causing them to stampede. They also had a similar effect on the enemies' horses and elephants so it was difficult to ascertain whose side these "gleaming silver shields" were on.

Nevertheless, after exiting the battle victoriously Alexander decided to not proceed any further into India.

With this thread im making no claims nor am i trying to convince anyone, im just presenting a very small amount of the information available to my fellow users interested in this subject..

From there you can all make your own minds up.. and if anyone can add relevant information it would be much appreciated.

Peace.

But this does not constitute scientific evidence to support ET life.

There is so much we still do not understand, these signals could have been from a supernova or some other type of rare galactic event.

I believe we are not alone in the universe, but i do not believe they visit our planet.
With the hundreds of trillions of planets, stars, rocks etc in the universe its a statistical certainty there is other life out there. Whether or not they are as advanced as us is another question, which i dont think we will be able to answer for some time to come.

Each number (or letter) on that printout represents how far off from the baseline a given received signal is. 1 is essentially 1 standard deviation from that baseline, 2 is 2 deviations, 3 is 3, and so on. To keep each column at 1 digit wide, they used letters for intensities greater than 9, such that A-Z represent 10-35. Beyond 35, the numbers would have started over again (that is, back to 0... that they had started over would be obvious, should such an intensity ever actually be received).

6EQUJ5, then, represents a 72-second period (each signal is given periods of 12 seconds for sampling and processing, so 6 signal samplings cover a period of 72 seconds), and represents signal intensities of 6, 14, 26, 30, 19, and 5, respectively.
And, again, those intensities are deviations from the baseline (which, of course, is 0).

ah ok i got ya... Its quite complicated to be honest. ill link to an article that explains it much better than i ever could..

Thus, the "6EQUJ5" code in channel 2 means successive intensities as follows:
6 --> the range 6.0 - 6.999...
E --> the range 14.0 - 14.999...
Q --> the range 26.0 - 26.999...
U --> the range 30.0 - 30.999...

5 --> the range 5.0 - 5.999...

Your correct.. it could well be an natural anomaly that we dont understand, thats why i mentioned the 1967 signal that we later discovered to be pulsar.

The way I see it, these constant discoveries from science may not individually prove anything but collectively i think they do point in that direction.. And i think they do support the theory of alien life, whether that is little green men flying around in spaceships or simple microbial life to life we simply do not understand..

It doesn't match the signature of a supernova (supernovae register across the spectrum and occur over periods of days, not seconds) or other known cosmological event, but it could definitely be something unknown.
It was probably extraterrestrial (that is, not terrestrial, not necessarily of intelligent-origin), since the 72-second period is the exact length of time the Big Ear is able to "hear" a given spot in the sky. And a signal intensity of 30 is far beyond anything else ever detected.

The signal is also particularly interesting because its frequency was, within a small margin of error, exactly equal to the spectral line of hydrogen.

Great post misterlondon, a nice collection of some great data.

I don't normally like it when people speculate too much, but.......

I had never heard of the 2003 SETI signal, and I am pretty well versed in Ufology,
On the new scientist site you linked too, they pointed out the planet would be spinning too fast to harbour life, suspected due to the frequency variation, I wondered if it could be a small base/outpost/asteroid mining by ET's.

Someone commented it could be a space station in their orbit.

When I saw in your post, it is believed that another earthlike planet could be as little as 300 lightyears away, It made me wonder if, 300 years ago, the beings visiting this planet now (or their ancestors) could have been starting their space faring career, transmitting that signal 300 years ago......

Total speculation/Imagination I know, but interesting to ponder.

Just a follow up point, after a bit of research,

Apparently Maurice Chatelain was never head of communications at NASA, in fact he was an engineer, and it seems he had left NASA before the Apollo 11 mission, so could not have heard Neil Armstrong's secret transmission, that's not to say I don't believe they saw things, in space and on the moon.

Funnily enough Phage has tackled this one Here

Shame though.
