you could also try a pendulum
afraid that's it as i would not use devices [save the above]
i'd be more with actually seeing via clairvoyance or astral vision
though i understand you want to do it "scientifically"
I have to agree.
I taught myself to dowse (not hard if you can suspend skepticism and doubt temporarily) using two bent copper wires (the type they use when shaping
bonsai treess). I can find underground springs, pipes, artifacts, just about anything. As a practising geologist who studied archaeology this
obviously is quite a handy skill to have. If like you said you're sensitive to various energies then this should be a piece of cake.
Another thing you can find are leylines - the energy lines of the Earth. Locate an intersection of these within your area and this will most likely be
the highest energy point. And also the point where the highest psychic phenomena is likely to occur.
I've never done much with a pendulum as I usually already know the general search area when I'm looking for something. But you would use a pendulum
first to locate the likely area on a map, and then move in with your wires, or whatever other instrament you choose, moving in concentric circles
inwards marking the leys on a map. After you've made 2 or 3 rotations you wil have found them all and the direction they are heading. Then you'd
simply use a compass, locate the convergence point accurately on a map, and voila' Obviously if your walking around a suburban area or a place with
other obstacles you'll have to adapt this circles technique a bit. And the funny stares people will give you walking around holding 2 bent wires can
throw you off a little.
But like DerepentLEstranger pointed out they're cheap - all you need is a pair of pliers to make them. They don't run out of fuel - unless you forget
your lunch, and they are generally unaffected by climatic conditions unless you're trying to locate these things in a blizzard.
If it's ghosts or other supernatural stuff your tracking I haven't really ever used them for this before but it would simply be a matter of moving
into the house or area and systematically going through room by room until you found the spot they swung together. If you've been doing it for a while
you can also feel it in you hands when you're getting closer and this gives you a general indication of where to walk.
