So what if rape happens in an OWS camp inside of tents where sleeping arrangements are out of the control of the individual and in control of the collective, because it happens "anywhere people are"? I take it this is the official OWS response that the masses are going to rally behind?

My comment obviously was not directed at whatever happened in this particular situation. I was just commenting on the OP which was trying to make it seem like rape isnt common and only happens at OWS.

For a start, its FoxNews. We all know why FoxNews chose this story out of anything related to 'occupy _____'.

This kind of headline is simply a personal attack on the people taking part in the protest. If anything, the headline should have read... "Man Arrested Over Sexual Assault in Philadelphia".

So the next time someone gets raped, be it washington... i will expect the headline to read:
"Man Arrested After Sexual Assault at 'The Whitehouse'"

The media just loves to spin everything into a gigantic mess. Twisting words, stereotyping, blaming a huge amount of people for one man's actions. Its pretty pathetic.

Either way rape is not a good thing... and if the guy did actually rape someone, then they should be punished. But the matter of fact is, what the heck has this got to do with 'occupy _____'.

Humanity is terribly, terribly flawed...

There are people who act sadistically even in the most well meaning groups and those that act with surprising integrity in even the most abominable groups.

This reflects nothing on OWS any more than the crimes of past members reflects on ATS.

Interesting thread... there seems to be a debate within the debate.

On Topic: This is horrible. Rape is easily one of the most tortuous things one human being can do to another. It has no place in our society and I truly believe we need to take a closer look at how the criminal justice system punishes these criminals who commit such an act.

I do not think it is fair at all to blame this on the OWS protest. It is a FACT that when you gather large groups of people into a small area, you will get individuals from society who are criminals. Look at statistics from any State Fair, Concert, Sporting Event and you will find robbery, rape, assault, and theft. Does that mean the State Fair is bad or is at fault for such an incident? Should we ban all Concerts and Sporting Events? The notion is just silly. As a Society we should hold the Individual accountable for his/her actions.

Admittedly this is off topic, sort of. As I said at the opening of my post there seems to be a debate within the debate here. As I am reading this thread the focus has not been about the rape of this women, but about the OWS movement itself. I find that very interesting.

If it is strictly a "socialist" movement, why should that actually matter? The America that I know and I wish to live in grants the general population the right to assemble in a peaceful fashion and protest the Government. It matters not what they are protesting about, they have a right to do it in a peaceful fashion. What that means is that even is the sick, twisted, dispicable, low life, bottom feeding bastards from an organization like N.A.M.B.L.A. wants to protest, they have the right to do so peacefully and I support that right and I would stand up for their right to do so till my dying breathe. Even though I absolutely hate the message of such an Organization down to the very last molecule of my soul and I would not shed a single tear if each one of these people dropped dead tomorrow, they still have the right to peacefully protest.

So again, I ask, why would it matter what OWS is protesting for? Shouldn't people be more concerned with the right of the group to do so? When people willfully infringe on the rights of the "undesirables" it starts a process where all people's rights can be infringed upon. History has shown us that. Hitler did not start out by imprisoning the Jews. It began with the "undesirables". The Homosexuals, the Communist, the Gypsies all came before the Jews and it came with Public Support. When you give an Authoritarian Body that type of precedant to infringe on the rights of others, it eventually progresses until your rights are permitted to be infringed upon.

For me, that is what is most important. I still have no clue what OWS is protesting. All I see in the media is a bunch of idiots who think that even though they took out student loans of their own free will they should not be responsible to actually pay it back. However I know first hand how the media works. I know for a fact they will interview 300 people and only show on TV the people that can use to label a group of people. So I do not trust what I see on the news, but yet it still does not matter. Whatever they are protesting about, no matter how silly I find it, they have the right to do it.

i think every one who's posted on this thread should keep a VERY close eye on this case and it's outcome.

Raped by a person who was admittedly from out of state and likely travelled this distance for the sake of committing this heinous crime. This does not, in any way, tarnish the reputation of Occupy; it just proves that the 99% are still being victimized by predators, though in this instance physically instead of financially.
