It was estimated at 5,000 at 12:01

It's probably around 8,000 now .. once people realized police were not going in full force people have started showing up in larger numbers. You can see that at 12:01 3 lanes of traffic were open, now there are is only 1 because people have flooded the area.

Yeah, that makes more sense and is right in line with the number I had in mind.

A lieutenant being interviewd by Fox said he knows nothing about a fire but the fire department is in place.

On the tent-fire he commented (paraphrasing) "it's raining so a fire shouldn't be a problem"

When i read about the firetruck my mind immediately flashed back to the civil rights movement

Yeah, I was just thinking about that... It is raining and.... how does a fire get started in a tent anyway? Something did not quite add up for the "tent fire" claim to me.

Now with the cop saying he knows nothing about it and that fires should not be a problem because of the rain....

Yeah, my thoughts exactly.... Fire hoses used on the people anyone?

yup the Lt. was stating that nothing really is going on
and they hope things just die down and the people leave
eventually on there own. That the deadline the mayor set
was just a time help start to dwindle the people down..

Sounds like a white wash LT.

Lt said *its raining so any fire would be put out quick no fire truck he knows of it out*

They've shut down 3rd and are diverting traffic through 4th St.

I wonder if they are trying to use the rerouted traffic as a sort of barrier. Even if they didn't mean to do it, its pretty effective, both psychologically and physically. It kind of cuts the crowd off on that side and makes it more difficult for incoming people to continue to help the crowd grow on that side.

I am interested to see if it starts to happen on the other side as well.

The press and law enforcement are really trying to play everything down and make is seem as though nothing is going to happen in hopes that people will just start to disperse and go home.

I bet the cops are bluffing they will not do anything
not at least until the crowd gets smaller.

From the police chief :

"We have not revealed the details of our tactical plan," says Lt. Robert King, Portland police spokesman. "We'd frankly like people to leave."

"We'll take action when we think action is appropriate," he adds. "It's pretty peaceful now."

So they'll take action anyways, even if people are peaceful... nice.

Oh, I don't know. It was just the protestors saying that they are going to be there until at least 5:00, There time, obviously.

You are right though. The cops are not going to do a thing unless the crowd number drops significantly.

Non violent resistance in action, is what we are watching.

There's been several instances of officers being shoved. Police (for some unknown reason) are trying to keep traffic open on streets, but the crowd is swelling (FAST!) and people are spilling into the streets resulting in shoving.

Yikes, and that is all the cops need to start cracking down hard....Should they get "brave" enough to face the crowds....Or should the cops get their numbers up even more....

Still hoping no one gets hurt. Cops or protestors.

yep 10-20 thou that is a lot for port PD to handle they lost this one, might wait for state to back them up, OR NG? Salem PD and others could be called in as well, Multnomah County did have a 5,000 reserve force of sheriffs, search and rescue and mounted posse, now if they still have that number i do not know, this number was back in 1984

Well if they follow police protocol ... they would leave the area. Because the area where the confrontations are starting (3rd and Main) there is a huge group standing behind the cops as well .. the cops are surrounded. Traditionally in riot situations police make it a priority to not have rioters behind them..

Edit: Protesters have just shut down the intersection.

I think it was dumb of the mayor to beat his chest like A monkey
over this....

My thing let them stay or kick them out don't do this wuss monkey chest beating
and not do anything.

If HE really thought this was such a huge health risk it would of been OVER by now..
There is no evidence to support that though.

just let these people stay (although i do no fully support ows)

the mayor JUST brought more attention to it HE IS A MORON!!

Oh, they may have been. I have all three streams going at once and am getting a bit mixed up at times.

My apologies if I understood incorrectly.
