Ok this is my first thread so I apologize in advance if it sucks.

The moon, tonight and last, looks like it has a couple of rings round it. Kinda orange.

Is this normal? I only ask because I have not seen it before.

Can anyone else see this? I am from the UK in the east mids.

Ta

Edit: if this is in the wrong forum then I do apologize.

Kind of a short thread for such a large topic.
Yes it's normal, nowadays, to see moon halos.

Sun halos are typical also...

Commonly referred to as Moon dogs. They are caused by ice crystals in the Atmosphere.

You'll notice this happens a lot after something happens in the sky that draws everyones attention to it and then everyone starts noticing the moon and stars as if they've never seen them before...

There is a lot of solar activity right now, and we just had YU-55 go by..

I have seen some of the most spectacular displays of the moon, beautiful different colors, hues and glows, what appear to be rings etc.. but that's only because I pay quite a bit of attention to the moon regardless of what else is happening in the sky (YU-55) ..

I think we should be paying attention to the sun right now though, it's possible a flare may hit the earth in the next 2 weeks.

Perfect! that is it. Great to look at.

And the ice crystals would explain it nicely.

Thank you very much people.

When I was a kid, we called them "storm rings". They always showed up this time of year. They have been around for a LONG time, and seen by early civilizations. It's not a global warming thing, or a comet or asteroid thing. It just "is". Enjoy it, and don't freak out.

I'm glad you started this thread!

I live in the Northwest, last night there was a very bright star approx 25 past of the moon, tonight it is 10 past!#

Now I know the earth doesn't rotate in complete concentricity, but that's a large chane as the same Bright star was at a quarter to last week with a much larger gap between the two,

They are chem trailing tonight, and the mottled false cloud cover is slowly moving in from the East just attempting to cover the moon " I believe"

Check heavens above. The bright "star" you are looking at is probably a planet. Their place in the sky changes quite a bit from night to night.

The moon has been really bright here lately. I live in Arizona, and my neighborhood is really dark, so I can always see the sky clearly. The stars have also been particularly glimmery lately. Can't wait to see what Jupiter looks like tonight!
