Paterno contacted the Athletic Director as well as the University Police (who have full power as Pennsylvania Police Officers). Neither of the people he contacted did anything.

I get the seriousness of the crime but Joe Paterno is innocent. No charges have been filed. As far as you or I know, he did what he had to do by reporting this situation to his higher ups. If anything he should be commended for saying something about a supposed friend.

Has anyone considered that person in Paternos situation at a later date may now turn the other cheek instead of reporting anything at all to avoid being let go from their positions? Who wants to go to the trouble of helping by alerting your higher ups when you could be branded as an accomplice when the actual crime is discovered.

The prosecution stated that they are not even going after Paterno, as no crime was committed by him, and he did not even witness the crime.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.
No charges yet... Not that I think any will be. But this story isn't even remotely over yet. There is going to be a house cleaning of epic proportions in both the university, and the athletic dept.
The state. The feds. The NCAA. The lawsuits. This is only going to get worse.
Joe Paterno had to go. He is, was, the face of Penn St. Not just the football program, but to a large degree, the University at large. The trustees had no choice. As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

Exactly
If Sandusky had been arrested the day after Joe Paterno told who he had to tell, Paternoo would have been labeled the most caring man in sports and given accolades hand over fist and the media would have covered that story until we were sick of hearing about it.
Instead they chose to get their story by doing the reverse - labeling Joe Paterno as the wrongdoer here.
What's sick is how quick all the sheeple jump to get out their torches because Joe Dimingo or Mike Fransessa go on the radio to side with their bosses in the media and sell you on Joe Paterno as the devil.edit on 10-11-2011 by Salamandy because: (no reason given)

The athletic director?

My point is this reason for letting him go is bologna and clearly makes the institution look like scapegoaters.
