Molotov bomb may have link to Occupy camp

PORTLAND -- Portland police said an improvised incendiary device was set off outside the World Trade Center at 121 SW Salmon and they're investigating a possible link to the Occupy Portland camp.

...
He said that police received unconfirmed reports on Oct. 31 that the gasoline filled bottles with a cloth wick were being made within the Occupy Portland encampments at Lownsdale and Chapman Square parks.

As city governments are becoming less tolerant to the Occupations within their cities, more and more confrontations with police will be expected. So far though outside of breaking windows and throwing bottles at police officers, damage has been limited (besides the destruction of the parks) but this appears to be the first attempted attack using potentially lethal means .. a petrol bomb.

In five years the federal government will have made wiping your butt a domestic terrorist activity, this will happen with OWS sooner than later then the government can commence with there real plans....

A molotov cocktail......

I've never heard them called a bomb before, although I guess in a way they are....

It's harder to call them a terrorist device if they're still called a cocktail

I'd seen this last night as well and I just don't buy it. Not even close. However I feel about OWS, it's about being honest and realistic in the end. I cannot imagine a camp allowing the serious talk about, let alone actual construction and storage of dangerous weapons like this. Especially ones whose very existence is so far beyond the law that it would justify a raid by simply sitting there and doing nothing.

Could someone from the OWS Portland camp have done that? Sure... Why not? There are all kinds in the camps, and I've written more than a few posts about that whole problem. In THIS case especially though, I can't come to any other conclusion than it would be 1 bad apple or maybe a few bad apples together and no sharing their very bad ideas with everyone else.

Even IF the core of OWS wasn't anti-weapon to the point of being self destructive in pushing away CCW carriers in many instances, there is a simple self preservation issue that makes the claims of camp involvement almost impossible to buy. One needs to spend time in one of the camps and overnight at least, but the sense and awareness of authorities watching is very real, pervasive and around the clock. No doubt, it's well founded. OWS core protesters just wouldn't open the whole camp up to a violent raid that could get everyone hurt and some even killed for what really amounts to a HORRIBLE idea in the first place....

Just my honest take....but not everything bad said about OWS is necessarily true. This doesn't even pass basic logic for the overall camp claims.

I predict at least one mass murdering pyscho to come out of OWS.Some freedom fighter that has read one too many Orwell books. Its bound to happen. But I still support the movement.

I see your back with more anti-OWS posts ...why don't you put your energy into protecting the environment and exposing some real criminals...don't you want a better world to live in with less corruption?

You might want to ask the Occupy Pheonix crowd. There was a thread on ATS about them having people carrying AR-15s.

Yeah... Good 'ol J.T. Ready, for the brief time they allowed him to be the camp Nazi. He is a nutjob who first tried getting cozy with the Tea Party and right in 2008 but was firmly rejected. His thoughts that being King Neo-Nazi would impress the Tea Party Right was a bad misjudgment on his part. Now he's trying to get in with the left and OWS. The fact he wasn't turned away on the spot and rejected in spirit from the other camps the same day the story broke turned me off pretty badly. To be fair though I understand he wasn't tolerated down there for very long. I could be wrong on that....but I don't believe he found the home he was hoping for in an OWS camp.

Perhaps if he didn't show up in full 'battle rattle' and carrying a rifle so tricked out with gun show toys that not a single additional gizmo can be crammed in to an open space, he'd be taken more seriously. Hmm... Naww... His presence at pro-nazi and National Socialist Party (Nazi) rallys is still too much for either side to overlook.

Terrorist attack? Exaggerate much?

And still nothing linking this to OWS except... unconfirmed reports.

Anyone remember that whole deal about weapons of mass destruction that were allegedly in Iraq?
Seems to me this is a similar false pretense for the government to crackdown. Agent provocateurs and what not.

I highly doubt that this was a OWS sanctioned incident, or that the "government" of OWS was involved. Inside the camp, at least here in Ptown there are a lot of "anarchist street kids" mentally ill homeless and criminals. But regardless, if someone is living in an OWS camp and attacks someone, say, shoots or throws a petrol bomb on someone .. OWS in the end gets the blame as an organization.

I couldn't agree with you more. This is exactly what I have come to feel most strongly about regarding OWS. The failure to purge the camps of the hangers on and trouble makers who are not there for the working side of a protest for change....but the party atmosphere and 'kicking butt' whenever they can find the opportunity. If only the troublesome and leech elements could be actively shoved out, the whole OWS movement would be better for it.

This did remind me of something else though..and rather than starting a competing thread I thought it might be interesting to share here. There was a terrorist attack relating to OWS Portland. Oh, yes indeed. It was a chemical bomb, no less. It just wasn't made BY the OWS members, let alone used by one of them. It was used to hurt or kill them, actually...which is why it probably didn't make half the news item it should have.

Terrorist attack with Portland OWS camp ...Portland Maine, that is.

Hmm.. nice find. It'd be pretty easy for me to speculate, despite lack of proof, on who might have thrown that bottle of drano... but I'll leave that to the professionals.

Maybe they threw it at themselves?

Should make a thread about it! That sucks though, there is no reason for violence on either side.. I see why OWS puts up with the crap they do (with their inhabitants) because they don't want to marginalize any population but it seriously hurts their movement.

There is also the possibility that someone against OWS could, using OWS as a base, commit a dangerous act such as petrol/chemical bombs and so on and make it look like OWS. There really is no way of monitoring who is doing what with the way the camps are built and the number of people coming and going.
