I can't figure out what the amazing part is. I saw some guy get close to a fire and in a few shots actually put his wet (I saw the steam) robe in the fire presumably for not much longer than the shot because it would get too hot shortly after that.

My buddies and I have spent a lot more time a lot closer to fire drunk around campfires. This is only amazing for people who haven't played with fire a lot.

Human BBQ always disturbing.
"Reports" from then indicate they were heavily drugged with opium.
Edit: He didn't self immolate, gasoline was poured over him and touched off from behind.
Strange how this event seemed sanctioned and police guarded the proceedings from intervention by monks who seemed to surge forward once the intent was clear.
You mean they're really going thru with this?
Thats not right. Somebody stop it!

My first question was "why on earth would someone want to do this and what possible religious belief could this be a part of?".

Then my second thought was that due to the very nature of there being a video on it, and therefore sensationalism involved, I place no stock in it whatsoever.

There was a famous case in which a monk set himself on fire in protest and he barely even flinched.I think he only moved after he passed out...and even then, he really only fell over.

You want to see the ability of what a true monk can do? Watch the video below.

Warning: This footage from 1963 shows the actual protest and shows this man on fire and he does die. The video may be disturbing to some. Please keep that in mind.

Hmmm read the comments said it was from a movie...

searched for it

turns out to be true

So.... nobody actually died in that video but it's still very emotional.

Amen brother! What's the last thing you hear before a redneck catches fire? "Hey y'all, watch this". And I'm talking about myself and my redneck friends here, no disrespect to anyone. We used to play the 'drop a can of baked beans into the campfire while no one is looking' game all the time. Ever see what open fire does to an unopened can of beans after about 10 minutes?

Let's just say the explosion can darn near put out a pretty big fire and the next morning you'll be scraping dried beans off of everything in the campsite for a few hours.

Aye - I don't think I could sit there on fire for ten minutes and simply meditate.

Even then, his heart didn't burn, leading him to be considered a bodhisattva. Very interesting (and sad) story...he's one of the backgrounds for my cellphone.

Definitely some very impressive powers of the mind/body from certain of these practitioners. As to this fire video, though - I'd definitely like to see some more study and additional footage. Seems a little hokey and not much that most other people couldn't also do equally well.

It's hard to presume things when you don't have empirical evidence. He's merely using Yogic techniques that are not taught in the west in the so-called Yoga centres where they teach you a bunch of physical exercises.
Nothing supernatural here.
