Could you describe what a "worm hole" is?

At the so-called Plank time, around 10 to the power of 43 seconds (a very, very, VERY short period of time), time itself becomes quantised. In other words, at this incomprehensibly short length of time, time itself appears as discontinuous particles. Thats right, particles of time. There is no way for time to manifest in quantities less than 10 to the power of 43 seconds. At this scale quantum energies distort the fabric of space, turning it back upon itself, and it is here that time stops. The energies available at this scale are enormous enough to create virtual black holes and worm holes in space-time. They are abundant and have been confirmed experimentally. This is the level often referred to as the Quantum Foam, and consists of a sea of quantum probabilities.

Fairly recent research by Sean Hayward at Ewha Womans University in Korea and Hisa-aki Shinkai at the Riken Institute of Physical and Chemical Research in Japan has indicated that these worm holes may be expanded to a size capable of porting human beings. This would be accomplished via the use of something called ghost radiation, or negative energy.

Heres a short article about this research.

I hope you find it interesting

Creation of a worm hole could be possible; taking into account the rise of string theory. For more info on string theory get the book, The Elegant Universe.

The concept of "worm-holes" has been evolving through many years. Earlier it was thought that worm-holes formed hypothetical connections between black holes and white holes.

White holes at some time back were actually confused with quasars, which are just centers of distant galaxies. White holes seem to violate the 2nd Law of TD as theoretically they are suppose to repel everything and heat/mass is never suppose to leave them, as opposed to black holes.

Recently, worm holes are the connection points in quantum mechanics according to different theories like string theory, etc as netbound has described.

General relativity has some solutions that are worm-holes. There is a possibility of a worm hole in the Schwarzschild geometry. There is also the Reissner-Nordstrom geometry solution. There is no evidence that wormholes of these kinds exist.
