As you know last night was "Guy Fawkes Night". My family and i where on our way to a Bonfire at around 7.00 PM. We where travelling along when above us appeared a "Firework". It was a very bright red ball and was travelling at about 200 feet above the ground at around 20 mph. As it floated along it apperaed to be dripping flames that fell to the ground. We watched it for about 2 minutes then it vanished behind a tree-line.
Is there a "Firework" that you know of that it could have been? If there is one i have never seen one like it before.

Not a Chinese Lantern. I have seen many of those and in fact have used them myself. It was BRIGHT RED not the yellowy colour of a lantern. It just kept floating at a contstant speed at a constant height. We watched it for around half a mile befoe we lost view behind the tree's. All the time it was "dripping fire" from beneath it. I would have thought that it if had been a firework then it would be considered dangerous in the way it was behaving.

This has me puzzled.

Well here's a red floating one but it doesn't appear to be dripping.

Could it have been a signal flare of some kind -- perhaps one on a 'chute?

That was very much like what i saw, but without the dripping flame. That settles it, it was a firework.

Thanks

Strontium is used in a salt form to make the red colour in fireworks, and considering where you were going to, that's probably what you saw. Sometimes the pyrotechnic mix goes not exactly as planned, but that requires further reading.

This is exactly what we saw. Only difference was the one we watched was red not white.

Thanks for the link

I am in Birmingham. It does sound similar to the Welsh sighting.
