Here's also my two cents on this theory. Gold is supposedly only created when a supernova occurs. Well that being said, im sure there are plenty of other celestial bodies further out in the universe that have ridiculous amounts of gold compared to our little planet. Supernovas are happening somewhere out in the distant universe and the gold they create im sure is vast. After all, when was the last time our galaxy had an exploding star ?

I don't think we are here to mine gold, I think the cash for gold adverts have a lot more to do with the government and a time when the monetary system will crash and they want all the gold before that happens.

Surely aliens have discovered more valuable things if they are able to travel the universe, maybe they have even realised gold isn't worth a penny.

Are you kidding? There are plenty of applications only gold's purity will suffice. Look into gold and you will see why it is so special. It is worth a lot.

If you read some history with regard to the Gold Standard you will understand why gold has been so valuable. It has nothing do to with aliens.

Makes no sense why they would come to a populated planet to harvest something so abundant in the universe.

If they had the technology to create a biological entity (Us humans), then surely they had the technology to get their own gold. We are FAR more complex than gold...so why didnt they just create a load of gold??

Makes no sense therefor i find it hard to believe.

Its way easier to just make gold that to fly all the way here and genetically modify a life form to dig it up for you. Im sure if they had the technology to come here and mess with complex life they would know how to just make the stuff. If we have known how to make gold at our present level of technology for 70 years its not going to be a problem for advanced aliens.

Gold synthesis in a particle accelerator is possible in many ways. The Spallation Neutron Source has a liquid mercury target that will be transmuted into gold, platinum, and iridium, which are lower in atomic number.

- Gold synthesis in a nuclear reactor

Gold was first synthesized from mercury by neutron bombardment in 1941, but the isotopes of gold produced were all radioactive.

Gold can currently be manufactured in a nuclear reactor by irradiation either of platinum or mercury. Since platinum is more expensive than gold, platinum is economically unsuitable as a raw material.

Only the mercury isotope 196Hg, which occurs with a frequency of 0.15% in natural mercury, can be converted to gold by neutron capture, and following electron capture-decay into 197Au with slow neutrons. Other mercury isotopes are converted when irradiated with slow neutrons into one another or formed mercury isotopes, which beta decay into thallium.

Everyone keeps assuming that gold is the only reason.

I believe the earth is a giant mining operation, do I think that's the sole reason we exist? Not at all, I feel as if mining is just a small operation compared to the grand scheme of things. I'd never claim any of this to be fact, I accept that its my belief and its all just assumptions, but I believe it nonetheless.

I the think the mining we did has been a thing of the past for a while though. Earth is nothing more than a planet with inhabitants now. Whatever interaction we may have had with ET has been over with for a while. Could happen again, and if it does I think it will have nothing to do with mining.
