Personally, it sounds like you were raised to just bend over and take it like a dog.
But, I could be wrong.

i didn't actually tell you how I was raised. Please expand on this, because I'd like to know why you think my 6 degrees and sense of achievement and excellence make you think I should be #ed in the ass.

I'm so amused by these anti-OWS rages. They're hysterical in the literal sense, over-emotional.

Here's the thing though OP, you do not exist in a bubble. We're all very glad you worked hard, overcame some stuff and have a good life. But don't think for one minute that some of it isn't sheer luck. I know. I'm in a situation very similar to your own and I'm not struggling. At least not dramatically. It's egotistical to think our achievements or situations are because we were some how better, smarter, stronger, more deserving or whatever than other people. Maybe just more than those presented with the exact same opportunities.

However, as I look back, any twist of fate or random chance could have made my story so far turn out very differently. I'm sure it's the same for you.

We live in a society. That demands some sort of contract of mutual benefit, a lowest common denominator if you will - for our ENTIRE society to thrive. Opportunities, resources, money etc. can't just flow one way. As an example we can't have roads in some areas and not others, otherwise we could not function nationally and compete globally. Same thing goes for wages, housing, education and health care.

As it stands, instead of responding to the will of the people to achieve these minimum standards, our political system has been co-opted or purchased by corporations who have successfully commodified everything to their own financial benefit.

It's the 21st century and that sort of archaic thinking must come to an end. Ride the change or change the ride.

Yes you did:

Self Reliance. Fortitude. Determination. these are the principles I was fortunate enough to have had my parent convey to me, and they're what this nation is founded upon.

To me it seems you were only taught half of what America was built upon. You have more learning to do on what this country was founded on.

I think people just want a fair wage for a days work, we are all cogs in the wheel, not everyone can goto college/Uni.
In my job I have to deal with constant threat's of attack, emotional stress and 1 in 3 chance I will get mentally ill because of the Job I do.
All for £8 per hour.
I hear about people getting millions a year for screwing the rest of us (Bankers etc) thats why I get mad.
The poor kids going to Uni and getting 25k in dept before they even get their 1st job and then not getting any Job...
I know nurse's who are in their 30's who can't afford a home of their own..is this right? Heck I will never be able afford a one up two down house to call my own.
Good for you that you are succesfull but I don't think you are the target here....

So the OP willingly took part in a fixed system (day trader for years) and knew the system was fixed, made money from it, and now that the movement wants the system to be fixed (which seems would "take" from the OP) he feels threatened, and says "force" will be used if "they" try to take what's his.....

What are they going to take from you?

Problem is, the OP seems to think that things are the same in his time (i.e. early adulthood), as they are now. Sadly, the fixed system you admitting to taking part in for years (I'm guessing, you only did it for years because it was financially beneficial to you) is why proverbial shat is hitting the fan. It is currently worse now, then when you were eating mac and cheese.

Don't get me wrong, but isn't a "Defense Contract" an entitlement?

You may have been able to eat mac and cheese, and pay for your education with your "defense contract" income, but the masses do not have this luxury.

Must note, I am not a supporter of OWS, or occupy (I have see first hand, their leftist motivations), but I do realize that it's our previous generations' reluctance to fight a "fixed" system that benefited them, that is what allowed our current state to occur.

What's worse then a group of mad people camping out in parks(who are sadly being led astray)? The groups of people that allowed for our country to be bought, sold off, and benefited from it before we were even born. The people that, since they benefited from the mess, support it.

OP, I think you are afraid that "the government" will come and take away from you if Occupy has an impact (socialism, in the form of taxes, I suppose). Why were not not pissed off, when you were financially benefiting from a fixed system that the government allowed? Oh that's right...

Liberty?

Please... OP you're just a "house slave."

We don't have it in for rich people. At least I don't. If you worked hard and got to were you are because you sacrificed and compromised, all the power to you. If you were born with a silver spoon up your butt because your parents or grandparent worked hard, sacrificed and compromised...all the power to you. If you got rich by being a fraud, steeling peoples houses, insider trading. In other words if you got rich off peoples backs, then you deserve to crash and burn. That is one of the reasons we protest. You sir, should lead by example. You worked hard and did what you needed to do at a time when a such thing was still possible for most. But as time goes on, the opportunities for those who study are fading away due to budget cuts, bailouts and needless wars. This is an other point we try to get across. I'm sorry that you missed our point and hope that you can come arround and see the forrest for the trees. We are all being duped, that is a hard fact of life. Most believe ignorance is bliss. What kind of world will we be in if we continue this trend.

Actually, it is not. It's Greed.

The funny thing is, the "1%" are driven be greed ("dont take from my hard earned money")..and the "99%" are driven by greed also (because THEY say that the 1% are taking their money).

Again: Greed, Greed, Greed...no matter what side you are on.

This is why your society will rot and fail, because NEITHER side is ready to make compromises, and its more important to each individual to have a dollar more in the pocket...regardless how many unemployed, non-insured and non-eucated your society has. As long as YOU have a dollar more i your pocket, you don't care about the homeless, unemployed or whatever other # is going down, you think your life "is good" while everything around you is going to #s.
edit on 1-11-2011 by flexy123 because: (no reason given)

So you're saying the last 30 years of my life, working for an honest wage, is greed? I gladly put myself int the "1%" that opposes stupid.

My first job was moving hand lines of irrigation pipe for $0.25 per piece. (I was 15)

My second job was changing tires and fixing engines in Twin Bridges MT, ($5.00/hr)

My third job was at a gas station, No pay, for a place to sleep in the back room.

My fourth job was in the USAF. I deployed twice, trained 2000 airmen as an MTI, supported NORAD before it died.

My fifth job was training satellite operators providing comms to our guys on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan

You can take your "greed" argument and shove it sideways up your 5th point of contact. You're the person this OP was directed toward: the entitlement cadre of losers.

So are the people at the OWS. Since you've used the terms "dirty hippies", "scumbags", republican= representation, etc. I'm not sure if there is any real debating, sharing with you. Seems your mind is already set.

I can tell you, most people participating in the Occupy movement have done exactly as you have in life. Tried to educate themselves, pay their bills, WORK at a job that pays enough to survive and prosper. They aren't against you or the American Dream, they are against corruption and egregious profiteering. You say we'll change things by voting, calling your local representative....while a agree that is of the utmost importance, WILL NOT affect anything in the close Wallstreet / Washington / Banking / Corporatism / Lobbying circle. The game is rigged at the top and until that is fixed, nothing underneath will change for the better either.....regardless of Dem or Rep. Step back, take a breath, and see what's really going on.

BTW...using slurs greatly takes away from your argument and makes one look unable to discuss facts coherently

Wants to complain and moan like someone taking something away from him when no one is. Wants to talk about "entitlement-bred" but doesnt want to look at that issue in society or fix it.

Glad to see you all fired up, just a shame its for no good cause. Maybe if you put a fraction of that energy into doing something, the world would be a better place.

I get it. Oh, believe me, I get it. The system is broken, but what i DO ABOUT IT is vote, and I call and e-mail my representatives and senate members. For you to imply I don't do anything is incorrect. I do what I can within the law.

Where was the "moan" part? seriously? you're just throwing rocks hippie.

Maybe you fail to percieve, that even though you, abide by the law, the corporations dont.
They influence our government through lobbying, and bribes.
In fact there is a term called corporate lobbying. And it may very well be the source of our problem.
Feel free to have your own opinion,its good for you, my personal opinion is that;
"if these greedy bastartds worked this hard on thier scheme, they deserve our stolen money/recources/authority"

(bye the way)

I'm like that: I tend to categorize. But I don't see the OWS people as anything other than leeches. Perhaps its the media, perhaps it's the way they behave. All I see is a bunch of college students funded by their trust funds and the usual group of protesters (code pink, nazi's, et. al).

I have to interject on this. No where did the poster call you the n-word. You are reaching now, a slave does not specify a specific color of an individual. A slave is a slave, color has no bearing.

quote from the OP

America isn't an illusion. It's an ideal founded upon individual liberty. I'm never content or comfortable... I always seek to exceed expectations. THIS is what our nation was founded upon: the strength of individual achievement..

NOT the collective. the collective drags you down. It suppresses you and makes you think it's ok to be average. Achieve, Excel

Sounds to me from what your saying its "Screw you Jack Iam doing fine" what a great attitude for a Human being, bet your against healthcare for the poor and sick.

THIS! very good point! But I don't think you'll like the way I take it. Just because other people don't abide by the law doesn't mean that gives you carte blanche to break it as well. We are a nation of laws, not men. The correct choice is to drive the law-breakers into justice, and we have a framework for that. Lawlessness met with Lawlessness fixes nothing.
