US forces reported finding a weapons cache near Hindiyah, about 100km
south of Baghdad, that might contain weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and
be the 'smoking gun' so elusive to the US administration. According to
initial press reports, US forces found missiles tipped with the
nerve-agent sarin and mustard gas. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld
could not confirm the find, saying that it will take several days before
US scientists can analyse the samples. Nonetheless, other news reports
circulating said the initial reports were false and that the chemicals
found were only pesticides. In a related development, US Air Force Gen
Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said there is no
indication of Iraq moving WMD to other countries.
