I'm sure no one here has noticed, but I haven't posted for the past month or so. My mother passed away September 30th and the past month has kept me busy with funeral arrangements and the business of settling her estate.

Most everything is done, now; her possessions distributed as per her wishes. She has been laid peacefully to rest next to my father. After 54 years of marriage and 16 years after his death, they are together forever. As I write this, I find myself struggling to restrain an insistent tear.

My mother was generally a healthy and robust woman. She had to be; she raised eight kids. She wasn't a big woman by any means. She stood five foot four and weighed 150 pounds but could whip any one of us that got out of line. She suffered a heart attack at the end of May this year and was in the hospital a couple more times over the next four months. I went to check on her at home that morning and found that she had passed away during the night. She had turned 88 on August 16th.

Her name was (still is, I suppose) Goldie. She had a story she liked to tell of how she came by her name. My mother was born in 1923 at a small farm in Missouri. The doctor hadn't arrived, but the neighbor lady was there. The neighbor delivered the baby, bathed her, wrapped her in a blanket and placed her near the heat stove until the doctor arrived. That woman's name was Goldie Porter.

I would like to present some things that I found happened in 1923:

Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as president following the death of President Warren Harding

First baseball game played at Yankee Stadium

Insulin is Introduced for treatment of Diabetes

Time Magazine hits newsstands for the first time.

Union of Socialist Soviet Republics established

1st radio telegraph message from Netherlands to Dutch East Indies

Transcontinental airmail service begins

Elmer Rice's "Adding Machine," premieres in NYC

Firestone Co put their inflatable tires into production

1st talking movie shown at Rialto Theater (NYC)

1st nonstop transcontinental flight (NY-San Diego) completed

1st Le Mans Grand Prix d'Endurance is run

Recording of 1st country music hit (Little Old Log Cabin in the Lane)

1st permanent radio network-AT&T (WEAF NY & WMAF Mass)

The Hollywood Sign is officially dedicated in the hills above Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Interpol forms in Vienna

1st transatlantic radio broadcast of a voice, Pittsburgh-Manchester

And some celebrities that were also born in 1923:

Larry Storch, American actor

Jean Stapleton, American actress (All In The Family)

Ed McMahon, American television personality (The Tonight Show)

Wally Schirra, American astronaut

James Arness, American actor

Henry Kissinger, United States Secretary of State

Bob Dole, American politician and Presidential candidate

Jim Reeves, American country singer

Rocky Marciano, American boxer

Mort Walker, American cartoonist (Beetle Bailey)

Charlton Heston, American actor

Alan Shepard, first American astronaut

Bob Barker, American game show host (The Price Is Right)

George Patton IV, American general

My sincerest condolences for the loss of your beloved mother.

Sounds like she lived a long and productive life.... and had a good man by her side most of the way.

May she rest in peace, and may the memories of her bring you children some warm comfort, in what may seem to be a cold world at times.

I am very sorry to hear. Best wishes in healing, but always remember that you'll never be the same, you'll probably never fully be healed. Time does ease the pain. You just...go on. My mother was murdered when I was a teenager, more than 10 years later I'm still here but there's always the "what if's and "could have beens" in life due to changes. You'll go through the grief stages, to each person they come differently. The fact you are posting this is brave and means you are healing.

The best way is to keep her memory alive and always know she is with you and continues to love and care for you.
*hugs*

I miss my mum too, and I enjoyed learning a bit about yours. Goldie--I like the name and it appears she left some love in the world through you.

Glad you're back, and we're here if you need us. Peace.

So very sorry for your loss...

Goldie sounded like an amazing woman and mother. I always heard 1926 was a very good year, and it seems it was because of her.

Wishing you strength and courage through this difficult time. My Mom is 88 too and I realize our time is limited. I lost my Dad some years back and know how difficult it is to lose a parent. My heart goes out to you. Hugs!

My condolences to you and your family. It's never easy to go through losing a parent no matter how old they are, i was 15 when my father 'popped his clogs' (seems fitting as he was Dutch) at the age of 55, when i was 15.

Never forget the days spent with them!

((((((HUGS))))))

I am so sorry you are left with pain while your mom lives it up in harmony but may you both reunite in love when you go back home, my friend. Prayers sent your way and a loving warm light to guide you through this storm. xoxoxox

My condolences. But take heart, she raised a good kid.

Keep in mind the lessons imparted and try to live up to them.

This is my time to go through what you have. I hope I am as strong.
