A friend of mine called me and told me that she heard there is a new computer virus out in cyber space.....that will make it look like the owner of the computer is looking up porn...when they are not.

Has anyone heard of this? Please share any information you may have.

Hi..I personally don't have any of these viruses on my computer....it is just something I am curious now about since my friend brought it to my attention. I like to learn.

About the only way you can get a virus is by looking at porn or using flash based free gaming sites, not going to them or signing up for them will also tend to leave your email free and clear of any email based hijack attempts as well.

Seems like an ironic virus if there ever was one.

It's always been admonished to invest in a quality anti-virus software, and stuff like this is good motivation to take the time for a full system scan. I can only imagine the living nightmare of being framed with CP, and the likely life-long impact, even if innocence can be proven.

Of course, "it was a virus, dear!" has likely been used as an excuse countless times.
Dirty, dirty interwebs.

HI..well I am free from the first reason you stated....(since I don't look at porn)....but the 2nd reason...so if someone is signed on to just a plain old game website ...where they can play checkers etc.....they can give you a virus? That I did not know.

You are absolutely so right....we all should have a good anti-virus software....I do have one...and I am glad. I have had it for about 4 years now...I just ran a scan on my computer...and no viruses were found....it is still working! I just hope my virus protection continues to work.

Also...I am concerned about people being accused ....when they were innocent. I care.

It's not a virus...per se.

It's actually legislation that's been introduced in both houses of Congress that is trying to allow the government to limit foreign IP address. Or basically, it's an attempt for an internet cutoff switch.

E-PARASITES Act

It doesn't surprise me that there is a parasite that would do that....and could be used as "revenge' for whatever reason .

Its very sad, that this has to happen.. and some people think it's funny and cool what they can pull off...to damage another.

I do so hope there is time when ALL truth will come out, and certain souls are ready to atone for some of the stunts they have pulled that have caused stress and grief, and maybe even worse for others.

Thank you for this information. My friend did sound a bit confused on the phone...so I thought I would put some feelers out to my fellow ATS members...and find out...what is what.

I just read the article you provided regarding this piece of legislation.....it is very disturbing. Again...thank you for making me aware of this.

I agree ...it is very disturbing how many people enjoy harming the innocent.....It is very hard for me to wrap my head around that way of thinking.

Sounds like what she heard has something to do with trying to prevent this .. If people can use other Ips addresses to do their dirty work..which I believe does go on..its not a good thing.

Not sure this act of congress if this will actually help alleviate the problem.... but making it harder for someone to use another IP address can't be a bad thing.

Yeah... I agree. It is very disturbing. It's the government trying to screw us out of the uncensored internet. I'm sure that's where the porn reference came from...lol.
It actually has some pretty good support. The repercussions from this if it were actually to go through are not going to be good.

hmm..just read the act..and its more about piracy..and illegal sharing of things.

This is another of a number of broad and overreaching laws aimed at censoring the internet. The people behind this are always the same bunch of corporatists: The RIAA, MPAA, and their ilk. There are also trademark and copyright bills--and one newly signed international treaty, ACTA--that they're trying to use to protect their businesses because they're too stupid, too incompetent, too lazy, or just too rich to bother. It's easier to change the laws so that they don't have to compete like regular businesses.

As usual, their government toadies are all too happy to comply, not matter how restrictive, overly broad, and unconstitutional the laws they have to pass.

And as someone above pointed out, they're not interested in hearing what the We the People have to say about it. This is slop for the corporate hogs, and nothing else....

Masking your IP address is perfectly legal. And has a multitude of legitimate uses.
It's like trying to ban money, because someone used a $20 to snort coc aine.

This is about governmental censorship at it's finest. They have been trying for a while now to get their "kill switch." But in doing so, they are basically imposing US law on the rest of the world. And that has always worked so well in the past. If they can cut of part off the internet...to "protect us from ourselves," then how much could they cut off that we would never know about?

I don't see the reason for masking your IP ..if you have nothing to hide?

The internet world seems to be an easy place for scam artists, and many other types of criminal activity.

How much as Id theft , and scamming people for information risen since the internet came along.. not to mention what it has done for the very dark side of pornography.

All of these seem to have grown substantially since the internet came along.

When you ask people why..they say its because it is very difficult to control what happens on the internet...because of the anonymity that people have.

I really don't understand what these new laws mean, as I'm not a huge file sharer on the net, and I don't know much about computers.

I also don't always trust the intentions of the government, because they do try to make something look like its for a good reason, but use it for their own agendas .

I do think that there needs to be a change though, too many get away with too much..it seems to me.. and there has to be a legit way to crack down on the serious criminal behavior using the net...and I'm not talking about those who download a few tunes .

You can have something to hide, and not have it be nefarious. IP masking is often used by companies discussing trade secrets over anonymous PM's. Journalists use it to help protect sources from being exposed.
I have used it myself when going to a site like Al- Jazeera when just being paranoid the government is watching me going to an Islamic news agency...even though it is a world wide recognized leader in news.
Some websites have been known to use traffic analysis on customers to price gouge consumers from certain countries without telling them.

If you were overseas, in another country, and tried to access even say..your own e-mail. Or your companies computers, unscrupulous individuals could find this out by watching where your IP goes. It wouldn't be good to have it known in certain parts of the world what you were doing.

Some forums...such as for rape victims or family violence, have users who use this type of anonymity to help prevent others from finding out who they are..or that they have visited these sites.

The other main issue I have with this proposed legislation, is making it illegal for anyone or anything to assist someone getting around copyright laws by masking their IP address. This would basically shut down non government legitimate uses for IP masking.

Don't get me wrong...the deep web can be an atrocious place. Most people would be mortified to see some things that are there. Fortunately, we are starting to see the users police themselves as discussed here.

It doesn't matter what you have....someone will find a "bad" use for something. But like I said earlier...we don't shut down banks, cause someone used them to launder money....without the banks knowledge.

An internet kill switch is just wrong. And it goes against everything the World Wide Web stands for. Bad people and bad things are everywhere. That's no reason for across the board potential governmental censorship.

I agree there needs to be a change. There needs to be more enforcement of US laws on US soil. Giving the US government the ability to shut out sites to the US people is as bad as some censorship we read about in China, or Iran or wherever.

We all know the uses of the shut off switch would be used for way more than it was advertised as intended though.

I really appreciate you explaining it so well..

I know very little about the subject... only that way too much crime happens through the net, and that is disturbing.

Thank you for taking the time to educate me..its much appreciated.
