There was a documentary on Channel 4 a few days ago about mummification and how it might have been done.
It's largely based around an actual mummification the team performed. It's fascinating actually being able to see how the process worked.
In particular, they prove that, at least for 18th dynasty mummies, the brain was not removed with a spike up the nostril, as is taught.
