Students Protest "Offensive" Costumes

radio.foxnews.com

An Ohio university is funding a student-led campaign to denounce what they consider to be racially offensive Halloween costumes – ranging from Geisha girls to terrorists.

The campaign is sponsored by a group called Students Teaching Against Racism (STARS), and is funded by Ohio University.

“Some costumes can be offensive to some people where you are highlighting their culture in a negative way,” said Stephanie Sheeley, a spokesperson for the group and a student at t

Seriously?! This PC crap is out of control. These costumes are satire. Now, we have a bunch of attention craving kids screaming that they're offended by this?

Seriously - That's like me getting offended over Billy Bob Teeth or the Larry the Cable Guy type costumes. Get over yourselves.

OccupyHalloween!

Every time I see some group get all up in arms about a insensitive costume or toy or whatever I always wonder why they never go after the porn business.

The porn business is perpetually stereotyping races and nationalities and is far more offensive than some ridiculous costume.

Because I'm sure it would violate T's and C's like mad I wont post a bunch of titles or themes but if there is any commercial product that is relentlessly hammering away with bigotry, stereotypes, and offensive images that is consumed by millions and earning billions it definitely isnt the annual Halloween isle at your local WalMart.

In light of this fact I cannot take any of this feigned outrage and offense seriously.

Beat me to it. People making a fuss that might end up with me not being able to wear silly costumes (or do anything else that doesn't actually harm anyone else) if I want are offensive to me.

You don't like the costumes (or the choices), you don't have to wear them.

Ok, this students either come to American because they want freedoms or their parents did it for them to have freedoms, right?

So now they want to use oppression to bring in what they were escaping from?

Give me a freaking brake, just a few words for them, This is American get used to it, or you can always go back to where you came from or your parents.

Darn no wonder this nation is going down the crapper.
Is freaking halloween if they do not believe in it then don't celebrate, but don't spoiled for the majority.

The article mentioned that wearing a Sombrero would be offensive to Mexicans...

How could that be offensive?

Dressing as a Geisha girl offensive?
Are there Geisha girls or not?
If so, how is it offensive?

The items mentioned seem to be parts of the culture that members are ashamed of.
Except for the Sombrero--that one really puzzles me.

Is nothing but crap, interesting that they are doing what many can never be able to do in their own countries or origin, (have the freedom to protest).

X2 (yuou said it). If someone is looking to be offended they can find it in any direction on any day. However, please don't make us ride the "i'm a victim" train with you.

Some segments of our population in America simply won't stop, EVER, until they have attacked and suppressed every last vestige of what we all grew up knowing to be American culture and tradition. It started with Christmas and renaming it Winter Break or Winter Holidays when I was growing up in the 80's. It's now crossed to almost everything, in every direction.

If it has roots older than about 20 years it seems, it MUST GO or be redefined so totally as to be unrecognizable.

Lets stop focusing on each individual attack upon parts of our culture and stand back a moment to view the much larger picture of all out offensive against the entire thing. It's a scary sight to behold.

Im sure they would be the first to complain if they were not allowed to dress up in their native costumes. With the exception of the sticks of dynamite.

Thank you! We're all pretty much saying the same thing, but I like the way you put it best!

There is also the possibility that they're just making a mockery of the media, and they arent actually serious about it.

Much like the hoax Young People Against Heavy Metal Tshirts

They depict scenes of violence and sex, and in many cases openly incite subversion and a cynical attitude towards the moral guardians of our society, such as the police, parents, religious figures, and law and order in general." ...
"I hope we can improve the moral calibre of today's youth and tomorrow's world."

It's encouraging racial sterotypes.

Not every Arab is a maniac with a bomb strapped to him (as in that first picture) nor is every Japanese woman a geisha.

You Americans are so self-centred and narrow minded.

I expected nothing less.

Would it be okay for me to dress as a Jew and wear a big fake prosthetic nose?

I imagine it wouldn't.

If I was to dress as a Native American and paint my face red, would that be okay?

I imagine it wouldn't.
