Rather than clutter up that Fragile Earth threads I thought it better to make a thread here where it is in the appropriate forum.

Continuation of discussions in quake watch......

When the program loads the data jobs are not turned on, or the service started in earlier versions. Either way you have to start the service which is not done because it would impact dial up users by downloading every 5 minutes.

I will improve the help later. It is not very clear I agree.

Make sure you have the latest version and the then start the data service in the Data Centre program.

You can download the program here.

QVS Data Getting started page

You MUST have version Beta E or later.

All versions are 1.0.48.0 until it is out of beta. There should be a big banner across the screen.

Yours should say E. That is from the development version.

Thought: In Vista are you logged in as Administrator? I don't think you can install services unless you are.

I think I have Beta D

Anyway, have created log and turned on auto alert. Will see what happens.
As tempted as I am to play around with the other options in the program, I think I'm better leaving it alone cos I'll probably stuff it all up.

As mentioned in the getting started page the easiest way of installing the data jobs is to go to the Data menu in the main program (not the Data Centre) and try to import quakes. If the jobs are not turned on it will ask if you wish to turn them on.

Once that is done you can start the service using the Data Centre. I will set the program to ask in the Data Centre as well in the next version.

Beta D should not be a problem but the plots are improved in E

qvsdata.wordpress.com...

I assume the service started OK? If not the Alerts Module will tell you every 5 minutes!!

You can check if the service is running here

2.1 Greece is most recent in alerts list.
Does that sound right. Actually the screen just tried to jiggle. Maybe there's a new one now...no.

If you look for the Alerts icon in the system tray and right click you can see the last list. Right at this minute that should be one in California.

This is NOT today

Note that you can open the program directly from here so if you see a large quake on the alert just click Go to QVS Data and the program will open with the earthquake listing opened.

Unfortunately the 'jiggle' is a manifestation of the alert popup fading, but I suppose it has it's uses! I am working on actually making the screen jiggle. Later...........

Once you have some data you can look at, either from the program downloading or by dropping in a database with data in it, you can set the columns on the screen to suit you.

On a 1280 screen it is possible to get all columns in view.

On the joint between columns in the header

hover until you get a double headed arrow then drag the column edge to where you want it.

Do this for all the columns and then right click in the data area and click on save column widths

That's it. It will always use these settings from now on.

Not QVS Data itself but to do with the output from QVS Data that i store on 4Shared. Some people seem to be having problems accessing the data.

Taking as an example the download for the sound of the earthquake on the Wisconsin thread:

You should next see:

When the countdown has finished you can click on the download link,

You do NOT have to sign up for anything to download a file. Make sure you hit the correct download buttons!

What browser are you using? I've tried both Firefox 11 (latest, AdBlock disabled, no other speciall add-ons or plugins) and IE (not sure if it's the latest, but recent), and still the counter never comes up. I am, indeed, clicking the big green download button *under* the WAV file, as instructed. Weird.

Please be aware if you are using any version of the QVSData program that Australia changed some data formats @0240 UTC today which has broken the Australia import.

I am working on fixing it and hope to have an updated program by this evening.
