This is a fascinating story of supposed ancient tunnels under the island of Malta. It includes hairy creatures and refers to "serpents" which while sounding crazy, is similar to some of the "hollow earth" posts on here.

This is a fascinating story and one that I actively research as there are many old temples and catacombs over here.
After looking through the internet the only other source I found is here

There is a book I have been told about from the 80's that explains how a school teacher went down and lost a whole class of children and how she saw humanoid creatures covered with hair and somehow controlling the wind.

Your states that the Hypogeum is closed, it is now open but only a few thousand are allowed down at a time, for humidity issues apparently

I will be going shortly as I have been visiting the sites around Malta. There are many temples and even a phenomenon called the cart ruts which are also interesting.

There are many rumours of many underground tunnels used by the Knights of Malta and others, one is that there is a tunnel all the way to the Vatican.

This is all very fascinating, I've been very intersted in Maltas ancient history and plan to make a trip there sometime before winter. I hope this place is open for visitors then, very very interesting and spooky.

Through ages there have been stories of places with giant snakes, minotaurs and other beasts in labyrinths and caves such as this one, some of them of them must be based on some truth.
If, big IF something really is down there I wonder they were left or put there as guardians of something important that has been hidden underneath the island, hum?

I think the more mysterious find was the thousands of skeletons that were found in those tunnels which were tossed and lost during it's "Supposedly" investigation and excavation.

No telling what was lost.
Just a thought.

Wow that is so awesome!

I'm half Maltese myself. Before he came over to Australia in 50's, my Pop lived in Valetta, the town nearby the Hypogeum entrance. I've been meaning to travel there one day to visit but have never managed to get there. Looks like now I have 2 good reasons to go!

My mind boggled with ideas when reading it though. What if Malta was used in ancient times by the cults and societies linked to the Vatican as there ritual sacrafice location. Maybe Malta was unknown at this time and they staged many rituals in the underground passages?

Or even what if the beings allegedly seen down there (which by the way make a lot of sense when considered from the Big Foot/Yeti perspective - they are said to dwell in caves and the like too) were considered significant to a certain cosiety and the people would send sacrafices to the humanoid beings to keep them happy and below ground? Satiate them so-to-speak?

All very interesting stuff tho!

Given all the volcanoes and such around the Mediterranean, it seems unlikely that any form of tunnel could be in place from Malta to Rome - ever. That would require the tunnel to cross under the Mediterranean from Malta to go under Sicily (and consequently Mt. ETNA), then crossing a tectonic plate boundary (from the African Plate to the Eurasian Plate), and then across the sea onward toward Rome.
