What have we done?...Without properly thinking about the possible negative consequences of our actions. We have been sending out into space,in all directions,Radio and Television waves, which are the same thing, for over 100 years. These signals travel at the speed of light and the closest star to earth,Proxima Centauri,is only 4.2 light years away...

Any advanced alien civilization surely would be able to detect and decipher these signals and waves, realize that they are of intelligent design and trace them back to their source...You and I...

I think thats why there were the beginnings of a major increase in the number of UFO and Flying Saucer sightings in the mid 20th century.Along with the wide variety of alien beings that are also reported, who have found our signals and waves continuously beaming out into deep space...

Quote from the link above...

The expanding sphere of Radio signals traveling outward from the earth is often portrayed in TV shows and Hollywood movies to be like a time machine. The further you get from earth, the further back you go in the history of Radio and TV broadcasts...

The earth has an expanding bubble of man-made radio signals expanding outward at the speed of light. These early Radio transmissions were short range experiments that used simple clicks and interrupts to show transmission of information in the 1890s.In 1900, Reginald Fessenden made the first, though incredibly weak, voice transmission over the airwaves.

Yes, and as those signals spread, covering more area and volume, they get weaker, and weaker, more garbled and corrupted by other electromagnetic transmitters like stars, or gas giants like Jupiter.

There's then the argument about ancient aliens. We didn't have radio then, so, what would have brought them, if that is there were any?

The idea of watching old tv shows on other planets is exciting, but your post doesn't need all that alien nonsense.
An advanced alien race capable of flying 4.2 light years.... is monitoring radio waves.
Think about our race. We tried listening to the stars for signs of life and got nowhere. With technological advancement we are able to find "earth-like" planets. It's more likely that they came looking for us first rather than getting an old "I love lucy" and realizing there is other intelligent life.

....supposing that aliens are real of course.

Well considering we haven't received/deciphered any incoming radio waves, would that not suggest that if there is life relatively close to us.......we are more advanced than them?

... or, they, if there is a they, are far more advanced than us, and smarter by having other methods of communication that don't broadcast their positions.

Who's to say that aliens know what radio waves are, or how to look for them. They could've developed complete differently and better than we did.

radiowaves are a frequency of light so, well if they can travel through space and time they probably know what light is.

Actually, they had heard our broadcasts for years, but it was hearing Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode that had them decide to come here to learn from our obviously advanced species.

Happy Birthday Chuck!

like any EM raditation - the propogation of radio waves is dictated by the inverse square rule

further - the atmosphere [ in particular the ionoshphere degrades the signal at many frequencies

so the true range at which any terrestrial broadcast will be recievable is far less than the theoretical range

I'd call that a nearly perfect match. Anyone else see the similarities??

I don't get out of the country often, hell it's only been a handful of times really and no further than the Caribbean to be honest, oh and Mexico once. But when I do I like to watch foreign tv, it gives me a glimpse into other cultures I'd otherwise never really have access to. The idea of our tv and radio signals being broadcast throughout the galaxy often makes me wonder what other civilization must think about us.

Aside from the whole we're warmongers theme that's been beaten to death I like to instead imagine people in an alien civilization kicking back and watching their version of the internet or tv to see what new entertainment has come their way from our end of the galaxy. Maybe there would be whole sub-cultures devoted to certain aspects of our entertainment, reality tv, game shoes, action, drama, porn, the list is endless. Maybe they make gatherings out the whole thing, for instance Friday night it's time to watch something they call sports.

I know if the roles were reversed and I suddenly had access to entertainment from across the galaxy I would be hooked, and this coming from a guy who hates our own reality tv and a good chunk of our entertainment in general.

This made me LOL.
I'd say this thread has been taken behind the woodshed and worn out.

i bet the entire universe is full of assh-les sending radio waves out into space.

second use your head. radio signals degrade in intensity and strength over distance. if i can't even pick up a radio signal in buffalo, 70 miles away, how can an extraterrestrial civilization pick it up hundreds of light years away.

a light year is 6 trillion miles. (6,000,000,000,000).

nasa, with it's primitive technology and pathetic budget already has the ability to identify planets and in a few years will be able to track and identify earth like plants.

and they are not doing it by holding and tuning an am radio out of a window.

now any advanced technological civilization, that has interstellar travel capabilities, would have found and detected earth long before the radio was invented and man was to busy getting drunk on cheap wine and running late for the chariot races.

all from the comfort of their home or space lab. most likely, they would have multiple galaxies fully tracked and charted, and spotting earth would be a kindergarten class assignment.

there are probably millions of planets more interesting than earth, and probably more than a few at the same technological level to meet and learn from.

face it, earth is probably not that important to other alien civilizations and only warrants minimal scientific observation. i bet the alien assigned to watch earth is hitting his head with boredom.

it's probably the intergalactic equivalent of being assigned to the north pole.

so don't throw your radio in the garbage and order the next manny pacquiao fight on ppv and enjoy it without worrying that you enslaved the human race by alerting an alien invasion force of our location.

Alien species may well not even be paying attention to radio waves. Useful as they are, radio transmission also has some major limitations and in a lot of ways our civilization is already starting to grow past radio as a prime means of communication, certainly past the wide casting of powerful radio signals out into the cosmos kind.

Satillite TV uses radio transmissions on a huge scale, but they do so by broadcasting right back down to the Earth from geosynchronous orbit in space, so all those transmissions are lost to the cosmos. Terrerestrial TV and radio transmissions still exist, but they are going the say of the dodo, too. Cable, internet, etc. which go through wires of one sort or another have already taken over as the primary means of communication for most of the modern world. An alien species looking at the transmissions we're putting out via radio today would only see our major networks, still broadcasting terrestrially, but all those hundreds of cable channels and XM/Sirius radio channels we also have going on, as well as all of our internet communications are invisible from their point of view. They could be eavesdropping on us, but they'd be getting an incomplete view of who we are at this point.

I think most terrestrial radio broadcasting will be gone in the not to distant future, though to some extent it will exist because it does have its uses and is so easy to do. But on the massive scale we see even now, I think in a century that will be finished. It might well be that a developing civilization only has need of the technology for a good two centuries or so and then its on to better, more capable systems.

Lasers transmission is already possible and far better for many applications. Lasers are also direct, so only the recipient gets the message. If someone can figure out how to use quantum entanglement for communications then one could transmit data instantly from, say, a rover on Mars back to Earth rather than having to wait dozens of minutes for it to travel through space as we have to now. That would be a huge advancement if it is possible (many say it's not), but that or something like it would mean two-way transmissions of data/images/voice/etc. would be at a level far beyond what can be done with radio. You could never broadcast wildly with such a tech, but for talking to Earth from a ship at Jupiter or for Earth talking to a ship that's traveled all the way to Alpha Centauri instantly, it would be perfect.

Assuming an advanced civilization has long since gone past the radio of tech, past even other things on this list and is using something like quantum entanglement or some other hype-advanced tech to communicate, they may not even be looking for signals coming in the form of radio waves. Their mark of an intelligent species worth paying attention to might have a higher bar than just pumping out sit coms and radio sports casts to the cosmos. Then again, they might just have detectors scanning the heavens for any and all signals on the electro-magnetic spectrum, radio included, so perhaps those signals would pique their interest and be cause for them to send a mission to its source and see what we are up to.

I wouldn't be so worried about our primitive radio or TV, or radar or other signals leaking out in to space and giving us away. Why do you think SETI who has been listening for just the same type of signals for over 40 years has heard, nothing. Let me hazard a real simple guess. Because maybe technology rapidly changes, and adapts? Even as we speak our digital encryption technology can encode signals in a less energy intensive matter. Even on a really "good" day all the radio frequency noise our human civilization can produce would be "drowned out" by the natural radio noise of our own sun. Think this is B.S? Ask SETI, they came up with the profile.

My point? Look at a planet using a non-invasive scan. Check out the methane in the atmosphere and use the needed telescopes to scan the spectrum and see what is methane as generated by biology, and that which is generated by simple chemical actions. How to tell the difference? Look for the biological modifiers, the fragments of DNA that will be present in the atmosphere. Can we do this today with our current technology with what we can do now? Not a chance. But in the future will the technology exist to make it happen? Oh, yeah. If I live long enough, I 'll build it for you, my gift. Now don't you think a more advanced civilization would have figured all this out long ago? Hey, if I can, I hope to God someone , somewhere elsewhere has already figured it out. But who knows.

i'm not saying the aliens are watching our old tv shows and listening to our old radio broadcasts, although they might be...But advanced aliens would surely be able to at least detect that there are continuous signals and waves beaming out into space from our direction, from our solar system, from earth

lets put one and one together... there have been well over 100,000 documented ufo and flying saucer sightings since the 1960's and we have been constantly sending out radio waves into space for around 100 years..."in all directions"

Hmmmm...Coincidence?...I doubt it...
