It's really sad to see people dismissing statistics when they don't suite them. And it is really really sad to see people that are uneducated even in these simple topics.

People, everything is measured in percentages! that's the only correct way to measure things! Measuring absolute values has no meaning!

It was ATS that someone pointed out that US has a much lower crime rate than Russia, for example. The US maybe has more crime than Russia in absolute numbers, but it surely has lower percentage of crime relative to its population than Russia.

So why not measure Olympic metals according to the population? either we should use percentages or not. We can't just use them whenever it suits us. It is not fair.

Furthermore, each country takes part with a different number of athletes in each sport. This has also to be taken into account.

By the way, does it really matter who has won most metals? I don't think there is a serious person that thinks it shows ethnic superiority or something...just an advancement in technology and training methods.

Are you serious by this statement alone any nation could go and justify some percentage that would make them the top of the medal count which is fine and dandy by my accord, however dont take away from what the US has accomplished.

So larger nations should then be penalized for their larger population this makes sense. I guess in winter Olympics we should factor in climate, seasonal temperatures, population, then by percentage of athletes to the training team or coaches, lets not forget the luxuries afforded to the athletes as well the USA athletes have better beds, damn almost left out the other factors like the athletes mood, experience with previous Olympics, lets all start to compile a list of factors other then the simple results of the Olympics that play a factor. It is truly not fair to assess all things with only some statistics, if we are going to use statistics lets break everything imaginable down. Lets increase the education as it is sad that individuals seem to feel fit to use statistics to fit them thank you masterp for you said it so eloquently. So begin then break down every imaginable extraneous force that affects the Olympic events. Please I cant wait to see that, let us use statistics correctly!

See I was under the assumption that one of the measures of ethnic superiority within our society as a whole was based on advancements in technology. If not this then what, explain what some of the measures of ethnic superiority are please. I guess this would constitute another list so by all means start this one up. We can start with my advancements in technology at the top and work our way down.

I've done almost all the research on this already.I was going to post something up later today or early tomorrow.

Nevermind.

Medals per capita Bahamas come out on top followed by Australia.

Both have one medal per less than 500,000.

The U.S.A comes out one medal per over 2,000,000.

As you can imagine China does pretty bad.

There are other interesting points but I'll save them for later.

Jesus, yuou people are pissin me off.

All this whining about Olympic medal count, and people have totally lost sight of the Olympics and thier meaning: good will and for countries to peacefully compete on the athletic field. Not about stupid political rivalries.

In 1936, at the Winter Olympics in Nuremburg, jesse Owens beat Adolf Hitler's Aryan super boy, Lutz. After the Black jesse Owens won, Adolf Hitler went down, congratulated him, and shook his hand. Owens and Lutz, after the race, sat together, talking, and becoming friends.

Now, what you people are showing me, is that a friggin fascist racist dictator shows more of the Olympic spirit than any of you, from whatevber country. Thats pretty damn sad.

Stop your whining. Any country that went to the Olympics should be happy and proud for taking part of such a noble tradition of athletic competetion and sharing. Thats what the Olympics is all about. Good Will.

Um, I wasnt aware I was anyones mentor?
Let alione aspired to it?

I would suggest YOU do a little research. How about jesse Owens own biography, for example?

www.mccsc.edu...

Read also Jesse owens story, his biography written in 1970 by him. He states Roosevelt snubbed him, not Hitler.

I am confused you really dont make all that much sense you remind me of bush first the war on terror cant be won and a day later we will win the war on terror. Your own statements seem to contradict themselves.

Oh and on the Owens things he flips flops about as much as you with his statements on those Olympic events. He is a real good reliable source; I can however see why you take his fiction as fact. As you also seem to have trouble remebering what you say from one moment to the next. I d'ont intend to be mean but are you serious supporting your argument with a page created by a child in middle school? I mean my dog has some great quotes if you want me to gather a few just let me know!!!

Must have been interesting having track and field during the Winter in a city that didn't host the Olympics.

The 1936 Summer Olympics were in Berlin.

This is a dumb argument. Most of us in the US don't give a damn about the medal count really, of course it's cool when you see your nation doing well, no one would deny that. The two biggest Olympic stories here were Micheal Phelps winning eight medals, the basketball team getting bronze, and the Iraqi team doing well in soccer. Most people think it's hilarious, including myself, that the basketball team did so poorly. And people think we're nationalistic and proud!

There are things people are leaving out of this percentage thing. What of medals earned by teams and relays? If you count them as individuals it more then doubles the US's total, and I'm sure ups the Aussie total a bit as well. What I'm trying to say is there's a whole slew of factors to be considered in the "per capita medal count" then just number of events won and population.

Aren't we all blowing this out of proportion here? It's the Olympics -- you know, sports, which are supposed to be entertaining? I don't really think it matters which country's athletes won how many medals. I don't care if the U.S. (or any other country) wins 1 medal or 100 medals. I'm just glad that athletes competed, people watched them compete and had fun, and everyone made it home safe.

Lets get serious people I understand that there is an American dominance over the Olympics but now Australia is going to justify their lack of success by crying about population advantages. Whats next poverty rates, land mass, spoken foreign languages, obesity rate, percentage of homosexual competitors to actual population norm, crime statistics, percentage of medals to individuals ranging 15-30, amount of fast food consumed by athletes, yearly sexual activity of competitors, for the subjective judging we can start to look at judges ratings and their alliance with the given country they score, the incarceration rate, the educational norms, oh best of all we should get a percentage of athletes in each nation and then correlate that to medals won. I could go on but hopefully I have begun to make my point. Lets get real its just another year of USA dominance and sorry Russia you should have maintained your iron rule when you had it but now you lost all those other countries that would have increased your medal count. Oh well sucks to live anywhere else sorry to all outside the USA readers dont mean to offend just tired of all the BS about our supremacy. We had the greatest medal count in the Olympics deal with it!!!

wow an american who knows about other countries besides his own....

also, we're not whinging, We're Proud of our athletes....we laugh at you because of your population not whine lol keep thinking your tops
