If you truly have zero dollars left after paying for essentials and there's absolutely no way on earth for you to better your financial situation...I'd say pray. And that's coming from an atheist.

Not judging you - believe me, I went through a (long) time in my life "living hand to mouth" and recently had to move my 60 year old father to my house because he lost literally everything - money, house & job of 25 years. On top of that we took him to the doctors because his stomach & legs were swelling up like balloons...he has stage four liver cirrhosis and hep C (with 26 years of sobriety under his belt, go figure - when it rains it pours.) Everyday he hits the pavement, 200 miles from where he's lived his entire life, looking for a job even though he most likely will never get one because he has no skills beyond driving a forklift, he older and sick.

Guess what I'm saying is - don't give up, keep trying to find new ways to survive and improve your situation.

If it was just me, I know what I need and live and not live with. But I have a wife and small children.

I have water I usually keep about 30 gallons of distilled water in the house most of the time. I do live with in walking distance to a 500K acre lake so water and fishing would be a plus thing. About 5 miles up the the road from us is national forest.

I get the can goods. Spam, beans refriede and normal, Cornbeef hash which I love, I have found it has a tremendous shelf life. Plus you have protein and carbs. The one thing I do look for in my can goods is items that do not require water to cook. DO not want to waste water to make the food if possible.

I have about 25lbs of rice.

Now I do have problems in this area

Clothes: My son 11 and daughter 16months will eventually out grow what they have now. Not knowing how long it could get bad or be bad. Should I bigger than what they need now?

Planting food and external water sources. These are all great but what if we have fallout either radioactive/biological and our crops or soil have been contaminated.

Feminine products for my wife and maybe my daughter depending when everything goes down.

For a family my size I am not sure if I could even begin to get a 3 month supply of items. I am barely making it now. I do have some BOB ready one with camping gear the other with basic medical supplies, water purification tabs, potassium iodide.

Another thought I know I am all over the place. I make sure to keep a change of shoes in my trunk for my wife and children. They like to wear sandals and with the threat of EMP we may have to hike it back home. Then that brings it down to another question stay or go.

Not to criticize, but Tampons are the last thing you need to be thinking about! They can go back to the old days of "the rag" if the need to...and Tampons are a convenience you cant afford when TSHTF. Especially your daughter...if she has never used a tampon before, she wont miss them

Yes, by all means, buy clothing that is larger than what they wear now. I would probably go 2-3 years out, and would again, not be looking for fashion -- look for sensible clothing at third hand stores and yard sales. You can buy tons of used clothing for pennies on the dollar.

Focus on clothing to keep you warm in the winter, and protection from the sun in the summer, if appropriate in your area. You can always resort to loin cloths if necessary in the summer, so winter is the critical thinking period here.

Water: 1-2 gallons PER PERSON PER DAY is the rule of thumb I have employed. Your 30 gallons of Desani water you have now is not nearly enough to sustain life for you and your family. Dont depend on the lake in the event of a chemical attack and believe it or not, SABOTAGE. You would be surprised what people will do to gain control of power. Especially your neighbors.

And last but not least: KEEP YOUR PLANS TO YOURSELF. By telling everyone in your neighborhood, you are making yourself a target. When it comes to family members, keep it on the low down, and only tell those you trust.

While this may sound cold, don't make provisions for those over 70. Sustaining their lives may not be what you want to do in this case. While you love them, your survival and those younger than you, needs to be your focus. I would think that Grandma will understand...I know mine would.

If you have cats, keep them. Dog? Yes. Again, as cold as it may sound, you may need them at some point to eat.

Just my two cents....
