Not at all!
I was born, raised, and have lived all my life in California.
What happened?
In a nutshell (no pun intended!) until WWII, California was, primarily an agricultural state. With the war came, what would become, the aerospace
industry, which displaced much of the state's agribusiness and brought huge numbers of people from across the nation to the State.
The State coffers grew flush with government military contracts.
Then the Space Race ended and all those high-paying jobs went away, but the population had nowhere to go.
Then the micro-electronics boom started.
Huge money.
Even more huge numbers of people seeking their "New Gold Rush" fortunes.
There was cash aplenty, and people being people gladly spent (much in the form of new tax-based programs) foolishly.
Then the Silicon Valley went bust.
Then the Housing market collapsed.
Then the world economy collapsed.
The people, and all that is required to support them remained, but the money required to pay for that support has evaporated.
And
THAT is what has "ruined" California.
