Brief overview of the Occupy Wall st. General Assembly process.

General Assembly.

The General Assembly is a gathering of people committed to making decision based upon a collective agreement or "consensus."
There is no single leader or governing body of the General Assembly - everyone's voice is equal. Anyone is free to propose an idea or express an opinion as part of the General Assembly.
Each proposal follows the same basic format - an individual shares what is being proposed, why it is being proposed, and, if there is enough agreement, how it can be carried out.
The assembly will express its opinion for each proposal through a series of hand gestures. If there is positive consensus for a proposal - meaning no outright opposition - then it is accepted and direct action begins.
If there is not consensus, the responsible group or individual is asked to revise the proposal and submit again at the following General Assembly until a majority consensus is achieved.

The United States of America is a melting pot of people and ideas. As a result the #occupy protests have drawn a melting pot of people and ideas to the US protests. There is no single group that leads, or controls what is being done at any of #occupy protests taking place around the US or the world. At any event there is going to be many different ideas on how to solve the problems they are faced with. This will remain true from the big problems, such as corporate greed, all the way down to the small problems, such as a few people not resepecting the accepted rules of the event. There is a need for some order and organization to keep the energy focused on getting the message heard, and keeping the movement moving in the direction the majority voted on.

"Robert's Rules of Order" were adopted as "the standard for facilitating discussions and group decision-making" to reach these goals.

A speaker at the General assembly will propose something and the reason they are proposing it. The crowd will then "vote" by either agreeing, or disagreeing. If the vote shows majority support, then the speaker will then give their idea on how to carry out the proposal.
While that is the most basic version of a General Assembly, it shows the beautiful simplicity in it. People of different minds, working together for a common goal.

The way in which the crowd interacts is through a series of hand signals. You may have seen some images of people using these symbols. While there are more, i will list and explain the 7 that are most commonly used.

1. Twinkling: I like this! I support what this person is saying! I agree!
Tinkling is done by putting your hands up, palms forward, fingers pointing up and wiggling. Similar to "Spirit Fingers"

2. De-Twinkling: I don't like this! I disagree!
De-Twinkling: Same as Twinkling, but with your fingers pointing down.

3. Direct Response 'Gun Fingers': It means only I have a correction, a fact, or a clarifying question. Do not use this to state a different idea or to argue values or to make a counter-proposal.
There are some GAs where people will hold their hand in the shape of a letter C to indicate a clarifying question.

4. Ears (hand to ear): I can't hear what's being said!

5. Wrap it up (Wagon Wheel): This is taking too much time. I get your point, please finish.

6. Point of Process (triangle): Process is not being followed/Off topic.
Triangle, similar to the Jay-Z and former WWE pro wrestler Diamond Dallas Page's "Diamond Cutter" hand sign.

7. Block: I believe the vote we have just taken is against the foundational principles of why we're here.
Block - Crossing your wrists to form an x and holding it over your head.

IMO This is what makes America great. This is democracy. The people making decisions for the people. Communities making decisions for their Community.

Sure there may be Anarchist, socialists, communists, etc, but no single group is a majority, and weither you like it or not, this is the USA and everyone has a right to their own views, and to speak about these views. Freedom of speach even applies to people with views against yours. You have a choice, get angry and use your free speech rights to denounce those of other, or put the differences aside and work together on a common goal.

A lot if them may be socialist/communist/Marxist, but will they be satisfied with a reordering of our capitalist system? I will never, ever live in a socialist/communist/Marxist society. I have a bad feeling about these protests, and I feel some or all of the protestors are being herded or pushed into reacting violently at some point.

what happened to exacting penalties on those who have committed crimes against the population &/or gamed the system to the detriment of the masses

We need to make a new social structure.

Does anybody here care to explain why a very well known Illuminati hand sign is being used as "general assembly communication" by OWS???





The OWS is using this hand sign meaning "Point of Process, Process is not being followed/Off topic." But I guess way too odd the fact that an alleged popular movement, picked up a hand sign usually spotted by Illuminati stooges...

It makes me think why some of these famous stooges are showing up amid OWS crowd...

The TRIANGLE IS A VERY BASIC SHAPE! Not EVERY triangle/pyramid = Illuminati conspiracy. If the human hands and fingers had like 4 more digits and 3 more joints per digit you'd be seeing ampersands and shadow octopuses, but until the Illuminati genetically engineer this type of human we'll have to settle for the simple shapes our clumsy hands can muster.

I would like to claim the square as my shape. Every time someone sees a square from this point forward you are ordered to regard me. I'm makin' "square" cool again.

Very informative post - I really hope this kills some of the fledgling rumors about protesters being in some Illuminati Cult.

I can tell you what you want to hear.

They are indoctrinating masses of unsuspecting people with subconscious techniques.
Make them feel as if they are a part of a collective.
Then when the time comes, and they must question their loyalty for the sake of the state, well...you know

what do you think? i'm not 100% on that idea, but it makes sense to me. you'd think there would be at least one person at that protest who would understand what that means.

There are many models of Governance of Populations/Countries - many are dismissed out of hand but without agreed aims the arrow will fall by the wayside.

Whatever it is that OWS hopes to achieve needs to be agreed upon in general (at this stage) and Spokesmen/women elected quickly in order to maintain the momentum.

Just hearing all the videos can give you an idea of what most people want but these ambitions need to be put into words both written and verbal - the banners aren't enough.

Perhaps a natural leader will emerge - even one that can be replaced easily at a later stage but someone has to speak up and represent the needs of the whole OWS movement. If no one speaks up for the majority all we have then is dis organised anarchy that leads to burn out.

Get Organised!!!

The majority means agreed aims - the means by which we achieve those aims will always differ but until the aims are agreed by all the Car is without a Driver - the route can be agreed later but surviving the journey is what counts right now.

"Point of Process"

Three words.

"Point"

A triangle has points. Three of them.

Add to this that it is one of the few shapes the average person can make with their hands and it's a completely logical symbol or sign to use, on multiple levels.

I know you really want to see these things, but sometimes a triangle is simply a triangle. There is an entire thread about this that I began reading earlier, but stopped because I knew how it would turn out, before you even started posting in it. You should visit it if you haven't already.
