Where do you propose people protest? Far out of sight?
Of course not! But there is a world of difference between protesting on the sidewalk or parking lot in front of the bank and
inside the bank.
In the former, your message is seen and heard by passer-bys as well as those entering or leaving the bank; in the latter, no one is entering or
leaving because you have effectively taken over the bank, and no one outside can hear you. So not only is it legal to stay on public property, it is
more effective.
Everywhere is not private property either. The sidewalks, streets, parks all belong to the city or county or state and are therefore public property.
Even some private property areas, such as open parking lots, can serve as a location to assemble. I take umbrage at any ordinance or law that tries to
establish restrictions on the use of these areas to protest or assemble, because as you say, there is nowhere else.
But inside? Nope. If I can't smoke there, you can't protest there.
