Where do you propose people protest? Far out of sight?

Of course not! But there is a world of difference between protesting on the sidewalk or parking lot in front of the bank and inside the bank. In the former, your message is seen and heard by passer-bys as well as those entering or leaving the bank; in the latter, no one is entering or leaving because you have effectively taken over the bank, and no one outside can hear you. So not only is it legal to stay on public property, it is more effective.

Everywhere is not private property either. The sidewalks, streets, parks all belong to the city or county or state and are therefore public property. Even some private property areas, such as open parking lots, can serve as a location to assemble. I take umbrage at any ordinance or law that tries to establish restrictions on the use of these areas to protest or assemble, because as you say, there is nowhere else.

But inside? Nope. If I can't smoke there, you can't protest there.

I am at work on my phone so I can't watch the most recent vid on the thread, but I know that here say in a shop lifting situation they intentionally wait for the suspected parties to leave the building before approaching the. They are taken back inside to see what's what. Perhaps before coming out she was part of the ruckus?

While what they did might not be the best idea in the world.... I do not see anyone asking them to leave in fact everyone is standing there listening to them....you should not be automatically arrested for going into a bank and talking to people about things which is what they did...

They were talking loud enough for everyone to hear but no one was yelling or making threats they should have been asked to leave if they did not leave the police should have asked them to leave or threaten to arrest them for trespassing and if then they did not leave they would be arrested... That is how the law works, they didn't break into the building and if all of them have accounts there they are allowed in the building even if they don't have accounts they are still allowed inside the building.

Even if they were in there yelling with signs about how much citibank sucks and screws people they should have been asked to leave and the police should have escorted them out with threat of being arrested on trespassing if they go back in again and disturb the bank.

I think that its funny how when I was a property manager I would have people get so mad about something and threaten me or I have told them not to come on the property that I call the police and they come there and even then they say "sir you must leave the owner of the property has trespassed you from the property if you come back on the property without permission you will be arrested for trespassing" If the person leaves they are fine if they don't or come back they go to jail....I even had someone threaten me one when I worked at a computer store because I wouldn't fix their computer for free after they got a virus on it because I can't fix things for free and tried to explain to them its not my store if I work on something I have to charge for it and you getting a virus is not our fault.. She threatens to kill me, her husband calls me non stop for 3 days threatening me and the cops say even after I have all of her information "well until she actually tries to hurt you we cant do anything about it" So I think its funny how easily these people can be arrested when someone who threatens to kill me you can do nothing about.

State laws vary though. I don't know where you live but here in Alaska (I was also a property manager for a while) if I could not trespass them just because I wanted to, they had to have already done something the police were involved in. Then I could trespass them and if they came back and I got them on camera, they went jail, do not pass go...Who knows what the law in in NYC...not me lol

I am pretty sure it is against the law in any state to intentionally disrupt a business, especially a group. I have no idea what the law is in NY but I know a bit about the law in my state. If a group of people were to do that here at a bank or a store either one. They would all get arrested. Charges would depend on how mad the business owner was and how unruly they were with police.... could be mild as criminal trespass to something to scare the hell out of them like terroristic threatening....

I do find it odd none of the bank officials asked them to leave, but in all fairness they may have been afraid to make them mad. The fact they didn't ask them to leave makes me think this would be the reason given...they were afraid. Something like this wouldn't go over well around here at all.

It is no longer about the rights of the crowd when they step inside the bank, then it becomes about the rights of others inside as well, this group trampled on their rights basically-- by obstructing the flow of business, and....perhaps causing people to fear for their safety
