Why do we wear underwear?

Seems strange if you think about it - shouldn't one layer of clothing to hide nakedness be sufficient? Whats up with underwear?

It's a comfort thing. Helps prevent chafing. Going commando can hurt. Well, at least if you're as big as me.

I've never understood why underwear come mostly in white. Shouldn't the standard color of underwear be yellow in the front, brown in the back...
