Obviously the bishop was wrong and should be punished.

But putting on clothes doesn't change our genetic makeup.

In fact I'm not sure it's true that all humans wear clothes, I seem to recall National Geographic showing plenty of tribes that didn't wear clothes. We also have other downfalls probably related to our genes, like killing each other.

So I think you're right, we like to pretend we are far advanced from other animals. In rocket building technology that may be true, but in other respects, not so much.

I learned in college anthropology classes many very primitive tribes when found were very moral. They did not have sex in front of their children and even went off alone away from the others when they all slept in the same huts.
They protected their children and considered it taboo to sexually touch a child of any age until a union with another was formed at an appropriate age.
Our DNA is close to every animal very close to chickens...we eat. Clearly this has nothing to to with our behavior.

It is clear that even a child of 2 who is molested and no even knows show the same trauma signs and mental ruins.
As far as the religious community and Catholics who declare they are followers of Christ who made it clear you have sex with one wife... that's it. he also made it clear children were to be protected.

I find the prosecution of people for what they watch on a computer screen to be questionable at best. If they didn't spread illegal porn anywhere else and didn't pay for it, and didn't harm anyone else, then what you are doing is imprisoning them for what you THINK they MIGHT do. That is called thoughtcrime. It is a terribly dangerous road to go down, and people don't even care about the implications. You brand someone as being beneath the law, for offending your sensibilities (rather than directly harming anyone) and then you don't care what happens to them. That last part is what bothers me and should bother anyone of conscience.

Furthermore, whatever your opinion on that, it's even more terrifying that someone is getting prosecuted for NOT TURNING SOMEONE ELSE IN for what, as I mentioned, is thoughtcrime.

So now not only do we have people put in prison for thoughtcrime, we have people put in prison for not turning others in for thoughtcrime.

What should happen to these priests is that they should simply lose their standing as priests, in accordance with the standards of behavior set forth by the religion (which, I would imagine, would also defrock them for watching any type of porn on the premises?)

I refuse to support the criminalization of thought, whether it is underage porn or anything else. Rape, murder videos are legal. Why is it legal to watch rape and murder all day?

One last question for the torch-carrying lynch mob: if they perfect the device that can play a video from someone's thoughts, should we also imprison people for having impure thoughts, as determined by the society? That is the inescapable result of imprisoning people for what they watch.

So what you are really saying is that, in your perfect society, rather than punishing people for actually harming others, everyone's thoughts must be controlled and punished in accordance with the standards dictated by society.

Have you any idea what is done to get photos of babies? The horrendous things that are done to get the innocent little pictures you feel are ok? So if these photos were of your little ones i guess you feel he still has a right to look and whatevery...with them!

Get with it - Child Pornography is criminal.
Just accessing it is criminal.
You don't have to have a thoughtcrime - the REALITY is that Child pornography is a crime.

Producing it is and should be a crime (harming of children.) Distributing it is and should be a crime (illegal distribution of pornographic materials without legal consent of participants.)

However, when the filthy pervert downloads and views the image we don't approve of, didn't pay for it and didn't share it, no one was harmed or affected other than him/her. The only justification of punishment in that case is for punishing what you think he/she might do. Therefore, punishing him for it is punishment of thoughtcrime.

Read 1984 for a better view on thoughtcrime, since you don't understand what it is, or why it is an unjustifable and dangerous precedent for any society to set.

See, having principles means you don't just discard them when they become inconvenient. If you do, then you never had any principles to begin with.

I see you have also failed to answer the question I posed. When the technology is perfected to read minds, will you support punishment of people based on thoughts contrary to the sensibilities of the state?

If the sicko had a picture of me in the nude that i did not give to him and he was jacking off to it I certainly feel i had been wronged...how much more so a child! Clearly where every gets the pictures he KNOWINGLY has them and they are not legal!
Your attitude is the one that took reasonable censorship off children s TV hour not even a commercial can be trusted for all the kids to view and has ruined our families and future and great nation!

The problem with it even if they didn't pay for it, is a case of supply and demand. He contributed to the demand which perpetuates the problem.

Additionally both men I would assume were expected by their congregations to be models of what they teach, it digs away and destroys people's faith and some people depend on that faith to help them make peace with the trials and tribulations of their lives. And they take money for doing it.

I think the difference would be a conscience, and the fact that deep deep down almost every single human posesses remorse.. even before we are mature enough to understand why some things are just wrong, we already do know that some things are just wrong. Hence, if you've ever watched a very young child speak about their experience with sexual abuse they can tell you how "wrong" they felt and how "guilty" and "dirty" they felt afterward. Just my thought on the post, that's all.. I totally understand the point you are making.

Ok, just for the record this post is truly the most disgusting point of view I have read thus far on this website. Ahhh and just when you are wondering what conscienceless and twisted individual could possibly defend the actions of a grown man or woman that chooses to view child pornography, children video taped being molested or God knows what is in those videos- well here you have them! Unbelievable that human beings exist that would think of a defense for someone who is perverted enough to even consider taking the time to look for sexually explicit video of children, and then actually go as far as viewing it. What "thoughts" could they have possibly be having that they are being arrested for. Hilarious...they were arrested for committing a crime, just as the makers of the videos should be. Thank God they found this sick individual out, as I'm sure it will lead to the prosecution and arrest of the individuals who created the material he was arrested for possessing. Wow it just occurred to me, you should become an attorney.. cause surely there are hundreds and thousands of other innocent people out there being arrested daily for viewing illegal child pornography that are looking for a defense, and an attorney.. the temporary insanity plea is a little wore out.. so why not switch to I wasn't "thinking" anything illegal when I was viewing all that kiddie porn..

I have only this to say to you and I am done.

I am not afraid of thinking. I am thinking. Guess what and who I am thinking off?

CHILDREN and their protection.

When next you are thinking - try including the CHILDREN in your thoughts.
Have you any idea how lucky you are that on this site you are an avatar attached to words. If the Child Protection Unit in Australia were trawlling this site they would be very interested in you!! Take that from a former Police officer.

Much Peace..

By viewing it you are supporting it.
Every aspect of Child pornography is evil, repugnant and mentally unhealthy.

It's great news to hear TPTB are final beginning to take this seriously - or more seriously rather.

I'm looking forward to the day when a little man in a blue suite walks up to the Pope and hands him a 'go to jail go directly to jail' card.

peace

you gotta remember, for the "good ones" their whole lives, and part of the reason they became priests, is about forgiving people and seeing past their sins to help them find salvation.

they follow the rules of their God and their Church, not man, they are supposed to think of themselves as being above our rules.
every pedo priest they expose to the public tears them and their whole church down farther from its pedestal.

not that that excuses them, but it does help you understand them.

wow.. this is the biggest bunch of cow poo I have seen posted in some time. The Catholic Church in the US is not above any laws at all, and the same holds for all the other countries they are in. The only Catholic clergy who are "above the law" are called papal nuncio - The Vaticans Ambassadors to other countries (People tend to ignore or dont realize the Vatican is a nation state).

As far as the charges go, its the exact same charge that priests / teachers / everyday people would face in the same position.

The only exception the church has is confession, and that is protected by Supreme Court rulings.

The guy is being charged... what more is there to do? I mean aside from throwing the law out the window and you guys throwing out some street justice.

the hypocrisy abounds....

I will be surprised if the charge sticks though, since clergy are not mandatory reporters of child abuse under MO law.

What happened to the liberal's, disbelievers usual response, "don't judge?"

How do you know Bishop Finn is guilty? I guess cause the godless N.Y. Times
and locally, the maximum pro-abort Kansas City Star says so...

Catholosism is based on the tenet that the pope is infallible as G-d's representitive on Earth. If the pope is wrong just once the whole religion is a fake and a sham and should be "moved to the hoax forum". Catholic church you sicken me, you tool of man and Satan.

Incorrect.

Also if people did research they would find out sex crimes aren't only a Catholic problem. Just do the research and you'll realize this. It's just acceptable in society to keep bashing the church. Anti-Catholic bigotry is acceptable. And if there are protestant churches who won't become politically correct and based on modern values, they will be despised in the future too.

I'm sure you are female, and as such probably don't even understand the male need to look at any kind of porn.

I am even more sure that I'm female than you are. For the record that last statement was even more absurd than your previous ones. Again, you should be an attorney because it sounds like you've come up with a great defense for most any sexual crime against women out there as well, being as MALES have different needs than Females do where sex is concerned. Although there are still some men out there that feel the same way as you do, this is the exact reason they are more than likely lonely and single and in YOUR OPINION viewing child pornography??? Anyway I guess that's what your point was... right??? I personally find that mentality one of the most ridiculously backward and barbaric ones since women not being allowed to vote. And you are worried about thought police

its already happened back during the great scizm when we had 2 popes at the same time.

Going to war over religion is like fighitng over who has the better imaginary friend.

Every single person on this planet experiences 2 things, and that never will change, regardless of nationality, skin color, gender, intelligence, etc etc etc.

we all are born....

we all die....

everything else inbetween is just filler

No surprise, this Catholic bashing thread is full of hate.

Those accusing forget they are sinners too and the scandal in the priesthood doesn't take away from the holiness of Christ's Church.

Satan unlike most of the people posting here believes Roman Catholicism is the
true faith. His plan is to abolish the Holy Eucharist. We'll see it happen, it's not
permanent thank the Lord, when the anti-Christ takes power.

Try to discern what I just said...

God wants everyone to become Roman Catholic. The Remnant is Roman
Catholic.
