Well, it was probably only a matter of time given the controversy in Britain in the last week, but Liam Fox has now given in to the pressure that has been mounting on him to quit.

He has also given a semi-apology about letting his personal and professional responsibilities become "blurred".

www.bbc.co.uk...

Defence Secretary Liam Fox has resigned after a week of pressure over his working relationship with friend and self-styled adviser Adam Werritty.

Mr Fox was being investigated amid claims he broke the ministerial code.

In a letter to David Cameron, Mr Fox said he had "mistakenly allowed" personal and professional responsibilities to be "blurred".

In response, the prime minister said he was very sorry for Mr Fox's departure but "understood his reasons".

In his letter to Mr Cameron, Dr Fox said he had 'mistakenly allowed the distinction between my personal interest and my Government activities to become blurred'.

He wrote: 'I have also repeatedly said that the national interest must always come before personal interest. I now have to hold myself to my own standard.

'I have therefore decided, with great sadness, to resign from my post as Secretary of State for Defence - a position which I have been immensely proud and honoured to have held.'

The news came hours after Mr Werritty was questioned for a second time by a
senior civil servant amid fresh allegations about how he funded his jet-set
lifestyle.
..

..
Dr Fox's decision to go came after reports that Mr Werritty's trips following
Dr Fox around the globe staying in some of the world's most luxurious hotels
were paid for by Pargav Ltd - a not-for-profit company which he set up.
..

..
His resignation is the biggest ministerial scalp since Liberal Democrat
Cabinet minister David Laws quit after a scandal about his expenses claims
last year.
..

..
Dr Fox is likely to be replaced by transport secretary Philip Hammond,
Whitehall sources said today.
..

..
Dr Fox's decision to go is surprising, as there were signs that he was trying
to see out the wave of speculation.
..

..
It will lead to concerns that the Sunday newspapers had uncovered fresh
information about Dr Fox and Mr Werritty which would have further damaged
his career.
..
..
Prime Minister David Cameron had said that he will wait until he has received
Sir Gus's report before deciding whether Dr Fox should lose his job.
..
..
According to The Times today, £147,000 was paid into the firm's bank account.
Among the donors were said to be a corporate intelligence company with a
close interest in Sri Lanka and a property investor who lobbies for Israel.
..
..
The Daily Telegraph also disclosed a further meeting – a $500 a head dinner in
Washington - that Dr Fox and Mr Werritty had attended, and failed to declare.

BBC NEWS - Liam Fox resigns - Live updates

In the past year or so, I've found the "live updates" pages on the BBC News website to be an excellent way of getting news of any real developments in relation to major fast-developing stories.

I don't remember how we all managed to satisfy our desire for news in the pre-Internet days...

As there are two threads on this posted at exactly the same time, I am hedging my bets:

It's a shame, this whole scandal. I rather liked Liam Fox, but this episode has sullied his "good" name (as much as a Politician can have one!).

I always thought that as Minsiter for Defence, it was good he is a former Army medic, so at least he has some experience of life in the forces. But he should have fallen on his sword a week ago.

This just goes to show the level of the corruption within our Government(s) when reporters and researchers start digging deep, naming pro israel lobbyist and financial institutions setting up and funding secret meetings around the world for the very top of our MOD,hence our overseas policies.Well he had to go. I presume he was pushed from the forces that started to appear from behind the curtain of secrecy.

What is scary is that the other top ministers (both labour and conservative) spoke of their support for Dr Fox' oh he is good at his job, blah, blah, blah
.To me they was saying'this happens all the time, please dont put the magnifying glass on my dodgy dealings.hes one of the lads, its ok.'

Once he resigned it was like the media and politicians was trying to move the narrative on or was trying to brush the crap under the carpet.

Next puppet please..
