news.yahoo.com...

The number of Americans who lack access to basic necessities like food and health care is now higher than it was at the peak of the Great Recession, a survey released Thursday found. And in a finding that could worsen fears of U.S. decline, the share of Americans struggling to put food on the table is now three times as large as the share of the Chinese population in the same position.

Three times as large as the share of the Chinese population in the same position? It's worse now than the peak of the economic crisis? This sounds pretty unbelievable.

The United States' Basic Index Score, a Gallup measure of access to necessities, fell to 81.4 in September--even lower than the 81.5 mark it reached in February and March, 2009. The recession officially ended in June of that year, but the halting recovery hasn't given a sustained boost to the number of Americans able to provide for themselves. The government reported last month that a record number of Americans is living in poverty.

How accurate is Gallup in measuring this? Are there any other links out there that are saying this?

Wow America! How proud we should be!!! There are billions of Chinese which should make it harder for them to maintain, yet we beat them!!!! Good going America!!!!

Sarcasm off.
This is truly deplorable, as it is definately true that China has ALOT more population than America so you'd expect their numbers to be higher, but yet, this doesn't really surprise me at all.

That is because China is rapidly heading toward a Capitalist society, whereas the United States is sliding into the abyss of Socialism. The jobs are in China now. This is the century of the Chinese. They'll soon pass the military capabilities of the U.S. They're rapidly funding space exploration, technology, and learning science/math/engineering related disciplines in college. We're huddling in parks complaining we can't get good jobs with our $100,000 music major and poetry degrees, and wanting someone else to take care of us.

This article is no surprise. Pass the bong and raise the taxes. Big Brother will take care of me.....

It's because we consider cats and dogs, PETS...not food.

Can't or won't? There are a lot of people (46 million last I heard) on food stamps, however, I wonder what percentage would rather take handouts than go out and earn. Every time I see pics or vids of wellfare lines I always notice gucci purses, bling and a few of them driving nicer cars than I have.

Obviously those on the food stamps are getting food on their table...unless they are including those statistics, your point is moot. I think they're talking about those working that cannot put food on their table and cannot get help. Which is the most likely scenario.

I would just like to know how and why Gallup was able to conduct a survey in China. The Chinese Government has restrictions on all forms of communication so that information coming in and going out is controlled.

From the Gov. Travel Website

Security personnel carefully watch foreign visitors and may place you under surveillance. Hotel rooms, offices, cars, taxis, telephones, internet usage, and fax machines may be monitored onsite or remotely, and personal possessions in hotel rooms, including computers, may be searched without your consent or knowledge.

So would the Chinese Government even allow such a survey to be taken? It is difficult for me to believe that they would.

With our current state of affairs with China, it seems somewhat suspicious to me that this report would be released and say what it does.

I call Anti-China propaganda. "They" are better off than "We" and as such should be held in contempt. But hey, that's just me.

Theres something like 40-50 million living in poverty which is disgusting for a supposed 1st world country.

Maybe they should sort out their own problems before spending trillions upon trillions developing new ways of killing people and invading foreign countries?

I often wonder when seeing these kind of statistics, how many of those millions could help themselves by growing their own food. Granted I realise that not everyone (myself included) has a garden / yard available to grow some vegetables or keep chickens, but Im pretty sure that some have a small piece of land available to at least grow something to subsidise their food stamps and put something nutritious on their table at the end of the day.

Regardless, this kind of news is just depressing.

You sure about that?

During the past week, dozens of women in southwest China have been forced to have abortions even as late as nine months into the pregnancy, according to evidence uncovered by NPR.

China's strict family planning laws permit urban married couples to have only one child each, but in some of the recent cases — in Guangxi Province — women say they were forced to abort what would have been their first child because they were unmarried. The forced abortions are all the more shocking because family planning laws have generally been relaxed in China, with many families having two children.

I take it that you haven't heard about the working poor?
There are people who are working, but their income has
been drastically cut.Food stamps is the only way some
of these people can feed their children and themselves.

I am thankfully not in that position for now, but I know several who are and it is very hard on them. A friend of mine is on disability and foodstamps and have been struggling to get a job for ages now.

It's too easy to generalize when it comes to this stuff because there's always going to be that one guy who abuses it. Food stamps / welfare is just a symptom of a greater sickness rooted in society and for the people stuck with the short end of the stick I wish them the very best and they are always in my thoughts.

Big Brother will take care of me??

someone from the military??? INSERT FACE PALM!!!!

last time I checked, "Big Brother" is who signs the checks, provides food, medical, pension, training, college fund, etc....Oh, and usually the inflated ego I;ve seen by those in the Navy. (which has always been laughable) the 3 hots and a cot crowd, who DON'T EVEN HAVE TO DIG A FIGHTING HOLE, get shot at, or worry about IEDs..(corpsman, seebeas, and seals get respect though)

Oh, and pass the bong??????

I was trained by and watched my MARSOC instructors pass a 'j' before leaving the hangar for helo-ops. While the Navy has cross dressing admirals and recruiters that scrape the bottom of the gene pool barrel.

And I bet the Chinese Govt could cut/paste that, and put it on their website warning Chinese travellers going to the U.S.

I wasn't insinuating they're all bad apples and welfare isn't necessary, but it's a lot worse than a few bad apples taking advantage of the system too.
