You are dodging the whole point. The point is that people have to pay for stuff that you use even if they don't use it. It's a normal part of living in a modern society. We are a socialist nation already in the sense that we have a collective pool of money and resources. Why people think that something truly beneficial to the entire health of the national economy (like universal education or healthcare) is where we should draw the line is a question I have yet to hear an appropriate response.

The opposite is anarchy and open capitalism which you can find in many 3rd world nations.

A free education? What would one of our Founding Fathers think about that?

Man, the nerve of some people suggesting something happening for free. I mean that just flies in the face of Hamiltonian principals.

The problem is the word free. It is not free. The government has no money and never has had any money. They simply take it away from those who earn it which is why those who don't pay in are so quick to demand it's given to them. Some do the work and create the wealth, others take while doing nothing to earn it.

Forgive me, I'm a little jaded right now. Interviewed about a dozen second and third year university students this week. The kid on the video was probably smarter than the ones I had to sit through. Not one of them was able to fill out a simple application correctly. How could I hire them? How did they get into a university in the first place?

Strangely enough I'm for carrying the free education to at least the second year of College. However, I think those getting the money should work at least 20 hours a week at something beneficial to the community. Like helping maintain parks and roadways or something that will repay the people who's money they are given.

I think all government aid should come with a provision that the recipient do in kind work to repay the taxpayers. Except the aid for the disabled and mentally ill. You want a handout, you do some work. Otherwise make a sign and stand on the corner with the other Bums.

yeah we are a "socialist nation" where more people are consuming than they are producing where over 145 million ameircans are getting their free cheddar without a thought as to where it comes from.

so lets add more come now lets ADD MORE give them their free education give them their free healthcare give them their free homes.

too many fools in this country just love to reward failures thats why so many are failing a 14 trillion deficit that dont matter the promises made to social security, medicare and medicaid to the the tune of 150 trillion dollars

NONE OF THAT MATTERS!! take your FREE CRAP you deserve it come on there you go.

whattheory gets it damn clear who doesnt get it and that is theres no such thing as a free ride someones gonna pay and that aint gonna be ows and even if you took every single cent from wall street there is noway to pay for any of that.

the only thing those people are doing and their supporters are doing is turning this country into a third world one.

for crying outloud.

That's the fundamental difference between Americans like you and Americans like me. I don't mind paying for the benefit of my countrymen. It's part of being in the club. Since this club is what made me successful, I don't mind paying dues to help others become successful. And healthy. And fed. Because we are human. Dammit, I get so frustrated at the callous evil I hear from people day in and day out.

I think a lot of what people are missing is that colleges in a lot of ways are just as corrupt as big business. Tuition at public universities could be cheaper if it were restuctured. For example when I was at Penn State back in 2009 there was somewhat of a scandal because a lot of the big ten universities were asking for govt handouts to help keep tuition prices for students low. Which at the time was a little over 20,000 a year for a in state student living on campus.

The govt basically told the president of PSU Graham Spanier that you need to tighten your budget because we cant afford to give you much money. At the time President Spanier was making 500,000 a year plus getting kick backs from various projects that amounted to an extra which amounted to around 200,000 a year. Plus all of his housing costs were covered as well as the use of a private jet and car. All on the students and govt dime.

Spanier refused to use any money the school generated through the insanely popular football team or alumni donations. PSU has a very large alumni association and makes millions a year off it. The reason for this was that this money was earmarked for expansion projects and so could not be used to offset increasing tuition prices.

The faculty was being screwed as well because it became increasingly difficult to obtain tenure and job security.

Universities are businesses their main focus is not educating students but making money. There were a host of other questionable practices exposed during this time about this use of private vendors etc which also contributed to the problem because they werent the cheapest option but friends of those who have influence with the university.

The education problem at least at the collegiate level is yet another symptom of the financial corruption within society. Its not as cut and dry as well who is going to pay for it. There is corruption that needs to be dealt with first before we even think about making it free.

I don't need propped up, either. I'm one of the ones who get "stolen" from. And I want to have even more "stolen" from me because I actually like to pay for the membership here. I couldn't have been successful without this nation so I owe every other American for my success and so does any other successful person.

I am not in the market to oppress but it seems several of my compatriots are. It is an evil. There is no way to dress it up.

nah im done here the only thing that has stolen anything here is government and they have taken enough money and enough liberty from us all.

and nah i dont have a collectivist mentality and never will i am an individualist as in those americans who didnt run to the government and other people for nothing but made their own lives and destinies off the their own sweat, blood and tears.

your way is the same old song and dance that creates nothing but dependency instead of creating independence.

Yeah.. this guy isn't that smart and this is a poor approach, but the problem that has caused him to be there thinking this is very real.

Students are going 20 and 30 thousand in debt to be educated for jobs that aren't there! In Australia I've heard you don't have to start paying back your loan until you have a decent job for your degree (Aussie members can verify if this is accurate).

There is a problem here.

This kid was indoctrinated all through the American public school system "this is the greatest country! you can be whatever you want to be when you grow up." Guess what it's all b.s. the country isn't what it used to be you can't be want you want.. at least not for a wage but you can go in debt for useless knowledge.

Come on people, so what the Politicians, Banks and multi nationals are having our pants down and having their wicked way with us!! Take it like a good citizen and ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

And OWS calls Wall Street greedy.

College is personal choice. Why should anyone but him be on the hook for that? Expecting someone to pay for your education that you aren't required to get is ridiculous. K-12 I have no problem paying for (for legal citizens). But for college, if you go, you pay. Don't have the money? Guess you should get another job.

I have noticed that the reporters seem to find the most selfish, entitled people to interview. I do think there is about a quarter of the protestors who have no idea what the true heart of the movement is. I saw one kid (kid, hell he is just a little younger than me, about 23 or so) being interviewed the other day, and basically his premise was this:
-He didn't go to college because "school wasn't his thing"
-He applied for techinical school but decided that it was too much effort
-He has no education or viable skills
-He has not had a job for almost a year because he refuses to work for $8.00 an hour
-It is everyone else's fault but his

It is people like him that make me ashamed to admit I am a part of that generation. The few interviews I have seen with people over the age of 30 are well informed and can articulate why they are protesting. *Most* of the under 30 crowd are there because they think the world owes them something. And unfortunately those are the ones the media seems to seek out. The protestors who are out there in an effort to peacefully cause change know what they are doing and why they are doing it. It is probably an entire seperate post of it's own, but why do most of the people under 30 think that the world owes them something and everything should be handed to them for free?

I hope the protestors that know why they are out there and what they hope to accomplish can achieve it.

People young people getting educated and old people getting medical attention is whats wrong with
America.

Neo, your entire world view is what's wrong with America, you are small in so many ways,
if America were similar in character to you, America would be a second rate nation.

College is a scam. I dropped out my freshman year, and didn't even ever really go to class in the second semester. My current job title is Director of Finance. I direct the finances of 4 separate business entities within a corporation, and will add in a 5th, 6th, and 7th in another year. All it took was hard work, ingenuity, hard thinking, commitment, and a willingness to sell my self humbly instead of aggressively. Without a degree, I have had to accept considerably less pay for some jobs I have had. But the experience is worth more than that pay, as I am making money while learning in a real life classroom.

I have carefully constructed a resume that shows that I can not only fill the managerial void, but also those other niches that most managers and executives are lacking in (like data manipulation and analysis, minor IT, etc, etc). If you want to do the same, it isn't hard. Just be smart. If you aren't, then you shouldn't strive for higher jobs. You will just set yourself up for failure. Instead, just do what you are good at and try to make a living at it. That is all it is really about anyway. Afterall, most twentysomethings tend to grossly overvalue themselves in the workforce.

The video only echos what I have been reading by most (not all) of the OWS supporters on here....however I have to say this young man was far more polite than those supporters here at ATS. Most can do a vague talking points on the issues, but the moment you question them on ideology or factual content the attack is on!

It's pretty repulsive to me as an older adult to see how spoiled and ungrateful many of the current generation are, and also how MISINFORMED they are about history.

When asking for source to back up their rhetoric I have been given links to Rollingstone, The Daily Show and a host of *really smart people, people smarter than YOU* but as yet not one single youthful attacker has ever replied with a post that provides the historical event that backs up their accusations, any names or even dates of when some event happened.....

very sad indeed. The more I listen to the youth supporting the protest the more I fear for my grandchildren! I had a poster attack me just this evening calling me a paid shill and a troll because I challenged him to PROVE we have been living under Communist rule in this country for yrs.... *rolls eyes*

HMMMMMM

Well..

I'm very Conservative, and yet even I believe ALL education should be free for citizens, including higher education .. my rational?

Education shouldn't be a privilege, and you shouldn't need to indenture yourself to a bank to receive it. IMO, it's a violation of basic Human rights.

American kids are dropping in our standing in the world grade wise and have been for 20 yrs. Our country just lost it's number THREE slot this yr and we are now #4 in the world, we use to be #1......

Our credit rating has been lowered. Our kids only score number one in the world in *self esteem** now, and the ONLY thing we seem to produce anymore is debt

Welcome to reality, America IS a second rate country....NOW
