Will there be women, power and glory?
If so mmmmmmmmmmm count me in, but if I am mislead I will bring down the house.

Let this be a lesson to the OP,

People will start hating your commune and the people you turn away
will soon gather up to destroy you...
Especially since your commune sounds like a bunch of stand up guys, the CUT THROATS
will come and kill you..
All the lone wolves who need the supplies will start adding up.
Just because good guys always win in the movies,
does not make that so in a true SHTF scenario.

I don't think any one can get in unless they can pull off the MAGNUM successfully!

I believe The Postman with Kevin Costner is about the closest Post-SHTF movie I have ever seen.

I start my scenario mentality at "The Road" and work my way up to "The Postman". Right now I think we are postman levels in this hypothetical.

I agree Postman was pretty realistic.

I'm a behavioral analyst in my mobile command vehicle.

I go around to different communities and point out the character flaws of the ones who claim to be 'in-charge.'

It's funny how those guys still wear a "gentleman's" tie and get the most pissy.

I have a reverse anodizing/ forward osmotic-atomizing reverse-synthesis-powered vehicle that turns 'gentleman blood' into fuel. The exhaust smells like sh*t...

Everybody everywhere gives me the fuel to carry me to my next community. Plus! free food and water, everything I need!
Because everybody knows I ain't fit to be in-charge... and I stink.

Skills....lots of bizzare ones.

I think the ones people would be interested in...

Multi layered security specialist. Have studied methods in SA and Asia that are still in use but universally banned and outlawed in the rest of the world....nuff said.

Electrical/electronics/advanced comms
Machinist...can make anything if i have the tools mill/lathe/forge
Certed mechanic
many other skills besides.

I can pretty much fix anything thats broken. Pretty much make anything from discarded items. Woodcraft skills are very good. Can harvest food regularly without the ''skunked" days. Cook and bake well with wood fired appliances.

Oh I will have 3 of these in my pack. The ones I have however average a six year life, and are silver impregnated ceramic at .2 microns. livesuperfoods.com...

So basically I can manufacture clean good tasting drinking water to trade wherever I happen to go.

Me?

-I can build anything. I've been in construction since I was 17 years old, I'm a very skilled carpenter but my building skills aren't limited to carpentry. The company I work for literally does it all, except masonry and electrical work. Find someone else for that crap(but I can do it if necessary). Carpentry is my forte though. I think that's most important.

-I'm SMART, or at least I think I have a pretty decent head on my shoulders. I certainly don't cloud my mind with unnecessary garbage like most people, whether it be MSM pop culture or "business".

-I'm FRIENDLY and easy going, but definitely not a pushover.

-I know how to CAPITALIZE KEY WORDS.

-I grew up in a small town in a subtropic region(scorching hot in summer, freezing cold in winter) that turned into a booming city, so I know the best of both worlds. I can adapt to any environment and its people.

-I don't require a lot of food.

-Good marksman. Good eye-hand coordination in general.

-My favorite past-time is studying up on apocalyptic survival.

-I know how to raise children. I pretty much raised my 2 brothers and sister, and currently helping raise my girlfriends 5 year old daughter.

-Most importantly in my opinion, I'm a musician... the good kind. Been playing guitar literally since I was 2 years old. I can play 1 guitar with one hand, or 2 guitars with 2 hands. I'm good with my hands in general.

I know I've listed a lot and it may sound like I'm boasting, but I'm really a very humble person. This is just my résumé so I have to tell it like it is

Oh crap I forgot to mention I can brew alcohol too

"Evil they are,...Far from them I will be" Yoda 21334 BBY

Wow, I stepped away for an hour to do some work and by the time I returned, the community had become evil?

Here's what I have so far:

A hearty welcome to:

- The person who can set up an electrical system
- The people who want to swap or trade
- The American patriot IF he'll let me have that buffalo pelt
- Our shower-taking leader extraordinaire (because Lord knows we need someone to keep all the wackos in line)
- The supportive listener (thank goodness -- someone who listens!) and music player who has values
- Anyone whose skills took more than three lines to list

Absolutely no to:

- Super sperm Hitler spawn
- The non-bather community organizer
- The paraniods who accuse us of elitism--or worse -- cannabalism for just trying to band together and survive
- Evil robbers who would steal our supplies and plot against us (why would you tell others that we're hoarding food -- what do you have to gain from that?)

JIMC you are officially appointed lead guard for your accurate determinations of whom to shoot. Here, have some night goggles.

Bekod, we're not holding anyone prisoner here. Hopefully, it's a society in which we all freely and equitably support each other. We'll have to work out what that means as we go.

Lawgiver, Snowen, and LadySkadi raise an interesting point about the shift from shtf/survival scenario to future adaptation and progress. I think both aspects need to be considered, but I'm not sure if that's possible. Survival must come first if there's no way to ensure both survival and future adaptation/progress.

When I stated that "I would steal and tell others you were hoarding food" I was trying to point out the sort of people you would actually encounter, I would never do that myself

This whole thread reminds me if the book "Lights Out" which this exact scenario plays out and I'm guessing you read it...are you Karate Man or Gunny?

Let's see if we can recap. We've got many fix it people, many security/warfare types, and it everyone is willing to propagate the species? Can anyone grow food? Can anyone fix something without a parts store? Anyone have a real source of energy? Can anyone make effective weapons?

Why would I want inside your sitting duck compound?

Damn, you beat me to it. This was along the lines of my answer. What makes you think any of us would want in your community? I know how to hunt so I don't need your food. I know how to make shelters so I won't be needing any of your lodgings. My wife has a nursing degree so I won't be needing any of your medical services. Society just collapsed and we got rid of a government that tried( and in many ways succeeded in) controlling us. Now that I'm completely free from that why would I want to join your community where someone else calls the shots?

I think the better question is... What do you offer us to let you out of your compound? You may be safe behind your walls but the roads and fields beyond those walls will belong to us. Need supplies? What do you have to trade in exchange for safe passage?

You'll let me in because I have meds and can take care of your sick and wounded.

But then I'll leave.

THAT'LL be the hard part.

I think anyone who has read apocalyptic books is using them in making their decisions.
Probably not wise and basing their fears on altogether unfounded events.

Personally I have been letting my (what if's) run wild based off The Road" The Postman" and "Swan Song",all of which deal with this exact same thing. Don't forget Lucifer's Hammer either.

First off, great thread topic. very open and interesting. Garnering alot of original responses.

Second it also help to realise that if SHTF there will be communities and what they want of you was something i hadn't considered befor.

As for my answer for why I should be included, first off, I would have an Xbox360 in my bag and a laptop.
Of course i would have the cabeling to hook the two together, just need power.

If your group cannot generate power, I do know a little about that, but since you had so many enginners offer their service I doubt that would be a problem.

For physical skills, I play guitar, sports, have construction knowledge.

As for knowledge, I study accounting in school, and physics and chemistry in my spare time.

Even though I have useful skill, I think the laptop and Xbox would be of most value, entertainment being at a premium.

Oh an I would be willing to shoot anyone who F'd with the communnity. I would als be willing to hunt down all the people denied access to take their resources and make sure they didn't talk. Of course we would keep those missions "above top secret" haha

I currently grow all my own produce indoors, year round. As a matter of fact thats where i was there for a few minutes. Picking a fresh salad to chill for dinner. No Fukushima dust for me thanks.

Thinking that everyone can do well with a garden outside in the summer with a little practice but the rubber meets the road when you come inside and have to produce for your own needs year round. Takes a lot of planning and serious skills.

Next step now that I sourced bulk LEDs of the various spectrums, is to custom build LED panels that are laid out to use one light per plant and match my tray patterns. I'm going to put an electric conversion on my mt bike and I researched some great non etch batteries That I will wire to solar panels. and go offgrid with that altogether. It runs about 20 dollars a month so about as much as I would spend at the store in electricity right now running small T5s and LED.

The main reason i'm doing it is so I can have real organic produce grown in a clean environmet, and no chemicals and bug killer in my food. once I cut all the way to solar for that the food is free.
