You trademarked the name of your camp? Is that fair? I was the first to use that term in this thread...

I'll take my cut/royalty in food, if you don't mind... Thankyouverymuch...

There's a cat on the spit over the fire... if you don't want any of that, could I interest you in some antibiotics instead? Judging by the first merchants springing up around here, antibiotics are gonna be in demand...

ETA: Come to think of it, the word "Outrider" makes mine unique, royalty-free. I'll still share the antibiotics, though... some of us are still gonna need to be able to walk, y'know? I ain't doing all the work by myself, while everybody else just lays around and oozes!!

I would like to make a woman colony, with just a few of us guys. I think that would be best.
Majority women, myself and a few other guys.

Yeah, are you on drugs!?!
Just what you want , a colony of women cycling at the same time
My 4 y/o son and I come thisclose to death monthly by the hands of my wife and teenage daughter... good luck with that.

Well fudge. I'll tell you one thing I'm good at.

Computers.

Other than that, you will find no other who is more adaptable than me. Also, I have a knack for knowing God, and I have extensive experience in close-range combat, thanks to my many years of gaming (no really).

I'm a highly skilled carpenter, there's nothing I can't do with a lump of wood, but I'm also well known locally as a mender and maker of anything, my major preoccupation over the years has been to learn the skills to repair or upgrade anything I own. If something breaks I take it apart and find out what's broken and do my utmost to make it work again, even if I've replaced it and am just going to take it to bits again for the parts.

so my skills are;
carpentry,
metalworking,
plumbing,
bricklaying,
electrics,
vehicle repairs,

These are just a few off the top of my head, there are many others and I learn more all the time, I'm rarely beaten by things and I've not found a skill yet that I can't master within days (apart from playing musical instruments lol)

Oh you've got RPG's now.....

On second thoughts i think i'll sit in the Tank and drink some moonshine tank fuel, call myself Oddball and play music really loud through the PA.

Where did you get those RPG's from anyway ?

Cosmic...

Same place you got the tank - we "liberated" 'em!

On top of that... the chemist guy? He's smarter than "The Professor" on Gilligan's Island, and knows how to make solid fuel rocket engines out of sugar and sodium chlorate.

The explosives guy? He knows how to make shaped charges out of ANFO, and how to calculate the stand-off.

The scrounger guy? He found a crap load of galvanized funnels to line the shaped charges with in the next town over, in a hardware store. My guess is the hungry hordes overlooked them in the looting, since they couldn't eat 'em.

We have some fougasses buried in the sides of the road banks on the approaches, but decided they'd be useless against your tank itself, so we're saving those for special occasions - like if you decide to bring any dismounted infantry to run security for the tank and keep us from climbing on it and lighting it up. We figure when those dismounts meet the fougasses, one or the other is going to come out shredded. Probably both.

If you manage to get past that, there's the hedgehogs and tank ditch to deal with...

There's another guy who can make black powder from scratch, but the barnyard isn't quite ripe enough yet to extract the potassium nitrate out of it, so we'll have to wait a while on that unless we can find a cave full of bats...

You know, standard, normal "stuff"...

Im not really sure if I would be let in any community as I would be traveling with a 13 year old boy and 17 year old boy. Even so we would have a bit to offer.. I would be bringing two strong backs to help all the carpenters, welders fabricators etc.. every group needs an assortment of gophers so to speak. I would also be offering my cooking skills, I make an awesome bear roast, know how to make squirrel gravy, and chicory coffee to wash it all down. I feel I should also mention that I am not afraid of spiders, snakes are good eat'in, and I know the easy way to catch the granddaddy of all cat fish and not get poked by his barbs but if I do, I know how to make the sting go away.

Also I'd be bringing 3 fully loaded BOB's to barter with. So let us come in so I can rest my feet, brush the tangles out of my hair and find a spot to set up a cooking fire. These cat fish wont keep forever!

Squirrel gravy?

Snake eatin'?

Catfish?

I may have just fallen deeply and profoundly in like!

If you can cook breaded groundhog (corn meal breading will do) and know how to fix poke weed, we probably need to talk about the outrider camp!

I fix generators. That's my job.

I'm no Engineer, Surgeon, Theoretical Physicist, etc, but I'm pretty sure your little community relies on plain old diesel generators as a power source and unfortunately they fail from time to time.

Funny when the shtf it appears we will resort to socialism.

From each according to his abilities...to each according to their needs.

A wasteful and meaningless enterprise focusing on future want, need and greed, and if survival is left to this how can we still call ourselves human? Has evolution ever gone in reverse? Has it ever changed it's mind? I think we are nearing that possibility now. Humans are a bit more subtle and nuanced a creature. We are not tools - and you have to be around some a long time before you learn what their great personal gift is. Sometimes it is just utter truthfulness and unwavering loyalty. They are not skills and you cannot even see them evident right away. If the most skilled is also a killer, if the best hunter is also a liar...there are times when you might just desire a sweet voice.

that made me actually laugh... a sweet voice really.... I honestly cannot remember ever desiring a sweet voice.. and post shtf I would not be thinking of that...

As for the socialism, you philosophic views are nice, but it would be about immediate survival...and I might also add it's a social experiment...

I assume that all types of groups will be around, some closer to communism...

and it's funny socialism is such a buzz word now... everything bad is socialism....
there are good parts to it as well, just liek communism, there are good parts,
perhaps it wouldn't be the best to base the futur of the society on it, doesn't mean you can't adopt a strategy based on the ideas for a little while.

Grunting and squealing gets old. If you are a man and not into the opposite sex you may not care for the sweet voice....I do. But I still don't think you are entirely human if you do not appreciate and desire songs and music. Even the mythical Gods had musicians. Without some respite from the ducking, running and killing, why do you live? Whats your point? Escape and evasion? Ingesting stuff and seeing if it stays down? There's a life I am not after. Give me that sweet voice and entertainment.....regular.

learn anything that takes your fancy, it doesn't necessarily have to be a survival skill to start with, once you start to learn one practical skill you'll find it gets much easier to learn the next one. For example, a lot of the skills I use in carpentry are much the same for working metal, it's just different tools and techniques applied.

What if you don't have the money, connections, time, and/or resources to learn such new skills?

wow... really hope i don't end up in the same area as the sweet voice guy.

As for the guy wanting advice on skills look up a thread called top ten survival books or something it has ten links to some good books all on pdf.

I mean seriously....sweet voice... seriously... nah I am a guy who likes his women, but in a survival situation there are more important things to consider.

Saying that being a decent human is the most important in one breath and saying that evolution, which has taught survival of the fittest, has taught us nothing because a slightly socialist agenda is being put forward in the next... wow.... mixed up much?

It is not exactly a survival situation...it is a community.
Other wise what I might say to get past that check point is BANG.

And then I might step over a body. Building is for settlers.
