So, Steve Jobs is dead... but what did he really give us?!?!

With the announcement of Steve Jobs death and the worldwide outpouring of sympathy I would like to ask... what did Steve Jobs really give the world?

This morning Twitter is full of comments such as "A legend and innovator that pushed us forward in technology"

No offence, but so what?!?!

What did this really achieve... we can add one sentence comments about "just making a cup of tea" onto a website while on the move. We have some fancy gadgets that look cool. The letter "i" has become a title... just stick it in front of anything and it’s become the latest trend.

And the "i" is important... Because for me it's use represents a change in human physiological behaviour... One from that of “community” and “group thinking” to that of the all important “me”.

While we all bask in this man’s glory and celebrate his achievements everybody conveniently forgets the effects of this, so called, progress and innovation.

Let’s look at the human impact...

Such as the 16 Chinese workers who jumped from the Foxconn building, due to poor working conditions. And the 20 others who were stopped from jumping by the factory security!!!

What about the environmental impact...

While apple paraded its "green" image around, for all to see, it failed to tell us the environmental record of the many companies it used in its supply chain...

Now, while the bulk of the blame has to be shouldered by the individual companies who directly carry out environmental crimes it cannot be ignored that Apple turned a blind eye. It seems that bringing innovation and maintaining profits is placed above all else.

Steve Jobs for me was a clever man, yes. And it is sad when anyone dies. But this outpouring of sympathy is misplaced in my opinion. This outpouring demonstrates just how blinded by the gifts of the slave masters we really are.

Oh thank you Steve Jobs... Who cares about some suicidal workers and pollution when i can Tweet 24/7 and download apps to my Iphone.

We have been mesmerised with tricks and toys while the thieves pick our pockets.

Flame away you Steve Jobs lovers... I know you will accuse me of being insensitive and exploiting his death for my own message, but I would prefer to remember the 400,000 employees exploited to make apples toys.

Great thread, but as you said, some ATS users will see it as insensitive. But you are right on the money here. All of his products are all but a trend in todays society. His products scream "anti-social behaviour". Everyone I know whom owns an Apple product, as very hard to get away from their devices for a decent conversation. Instead, they are sitting with their faces planted in their Apple product. You will get half way through a conversation with said friend, before they hear a ding in their pocket, pull out their iphone and start tapping away at their screen...on Facebook. And do not get me started about Facebook.

I admit that Steve Jobs was an innovative man, but also a very very intelligent businessman. At the end of the day, sales figures was all that would eventually matter. Without the $$$$ there was to be no Apple.

May he sincerely Rest In Peace, but may he be remembered as our first step to anti-socialism for the next 50 years.

Apple is now wealthier than the Federal Government. I think there is much to be said about that. But my point about reading good books was about a trilogy written over a hundred years ago called the secret of success if I am not mistaken, it was the book that inspired the Secret and much of the material was lifted from the three books in the trilogy.

Anyhow the book the secret is a bit misleading being that it was taken from this book and the basic principle is that God for lack of a better term fills up the empty space around us and is a conduit for consciousness. The art of being successful is both being humble to God and creating so that others may use what you created to further the creative process.

Steve Jobs lived to his fullest potential as a man, he is with God now.

Thanks OP, you put my own thoughts quite well.

He was one of the players, allowed to amass obscene wealth in exchange for distracting the masses. I couldn't afford any of his shiny toys, so thankfully i had nothing to do with him or his corporation.

The comment above about the iEverything is spot on, we as a society are poorer, and weaker for his addictive additions. Thanks to him and the other players, less kids read books, less kids play outside, more kids learn to be completely self centred imbeciles. Like Steve was, and Bill is. They're all the same corporate schmucks that are ruining the planet we all share.

Why? I have not insulted Steve Jobs personally with this thread. No name calling or personal attacks.... Merely pointing out my belief that this, outpouring of sympathy, is misguided and that Steve Jobs innovations have arguably caused more harm than good.

Did Apple stop production when the workers were jumping to their deaths?? Did they stop advertising their message when their suppliers were polluting rivers??

Of course not, they trundled ahead with their plans.

Did it ever anger you that Apple didn’t stop their activities while the families of the suicide workers buried their dead? If not, why does the timing of this thread anger you?

I'm with you all the way on this one Muckster. It's amazing how people can turn a blind eye to the darker side of Jobs when his gadgets make one look cool. Our value system has become one that is morally bankrupt. To know the man properly we must accept the good and in this case, the bad.

Good of you to remind us of the truth behind this slavery corporation. We're now in the first tech war between Apple and Samsung for example. A war where only the employees are the victims as they will be squeezed even more to make higher profits.

I'm sure Steve was a visionary to some extend but in the end I think he relied on R&D rather than what the press likes us to believe he was driving the business himself.
The fact that he came back gave investors new hopes and that's what was his success. Other than the puppetry he put on when they launched a new product I don't think he really did much.

One thing we can learn from his death though is that no matter how extremely rich you are you can still become a victim of deadly disease. Money didn't save Steve... maybe it prolonged his life a little but that's all.

As I sit here browsing ATS on my T-Mobile myTouch 4G Android based smartphone, switch over to my twitter client and facebook app to check my updates and chuckle at an ”Android rules, iPhone sucks!” post, I glance up at a couple of employees coming into work talking with each other about getting a Kindle Fire tablet for the holidays, I notice a really good song on pandora so I load up the AmazonMP3 app, search for, buy and download the song, I then realize something.

Seriously, what has Steve Jobs contributed to our daily lives?
Then I shrug and continue on with my non-apple mobile internet connected life.

No, he didn't invent the computer, the tablet or the smartphone.
What he did do was create the platforms and designs that made these things usable and accessible to the masses.
If you can't see what he has contributed to our lives, you never will.

As far as computers and what not go... from memory look up the "mother of all demos" in 1968 that led to the personal computer revolution we know today.. Apple was only one of the players on the personal computer scene.. and I certainly do not feel without their computers as one of the competitors we would have no computers or internet today.

Apple has become brilliant at marketing, media spin and above all adding polish to their products not to mention stealing the markets from Windows (which is not a bad thing) touchscreen tablet like pcs where already around before the iPad.. touchcreen mobile phones running win mobile where already around before the iPhone..

Where is the innovation bar the one where he creates the need/desire in peoples minds.. the whole you are nothing if you don't have an iPhone comes across as pretty unethical, but does make for brilliant sales.. and on that score.. they score 10/10 for innovative sales.
