"A sexually transmitted virus is responsible for the recent rise in oral cancer, ABC News reports"

- HPV, or human papillomavirus, best known for causing cervical cancer, can also cause cancer in the upper throat.

- nearly 10,000 new cases of oropharyngeal cancer each year.

-overall incidence of the disease has risen by 28 percent since 1988 while other types of head-and-neck cancer have been declining.

if the 'trend' continues, oralcancer will become the nation's main HPV-related cancer within the decade
