Ko Young Hui - the mother of the man considered by analysts as a possible successor to Kim - emigrated to North Korea in the 1960s from Japan, where
she lived among the ethnic Korean minority.
Little else is known about Ko, in keeping with the secrecy that shrouds one of the world's most reclusive countries.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency said that Ko had an operation for breast cancer and was treated by Western doctors.
