'Get your heads out of the gutters, America's musicians. We always knew that with all your nipple-showing and lesbian-kissing and crotch-grabbing that you're obsessed with sex, and today we have the science to back it up: "Approximately 92% of the 174 songs that made it into the [Billboard] Top 10 in 2009 contained reproductive messages," says SUNY Albany psychology professor Dawn R. Hobbs in Evolutionary Psychology. That's right--"reproductive messages," our newest favorite euphemism.

Those 174 top-selling songs were analyzed in order to determine how many sexy messages they contained in any of 18 sexy categories, including "arousal," "sexual prowess," and "genitalia." There was an average of 10.49 sex-related phrases per song, with R&B being head-and-shoulders(-and-maybe-some-other-body-parts) above the two other musical genres analyzed, country and pop. "Sexual appeal" was the most popular theme among both R&B and pop songs, while "commitment" (yawn) was most prevalent in country music.'

This is not very surprising, sex sells.

When all you can think about is being popular and getting some, you have zero time left over to educate yourself and help change things. Makes perfect sense.

Ever read "Brave New World"? They used sex as a method of control there too!

those stats if accurate are quite surprising. i never would of thought it would be as high as that..

songs are a very powerful way of influencing the people.. we hear their messages over and over.. we sing them to ourselves over and over.. we attach emotions, feelings and memories to them.. and all the time this goes into the sub conscious mind and we are not even aware of it.

if i could give one bit of advice to other members here, is to be aware of the messages in the music you listen to, look at the lyrics and way the song is constructed. look out for negative messages that repeat themselves over and over, and especially ones that seem to get "stuck in your head" if you know what i mean by that.. look at the "catchy" bits of the songs,

ultimately it would be better to listen to music that contains no words at all but that is virtually impossible in this day and age. and imo very boring.. just try and be aware of what you are listening to.

Scientists also did another related study and found that sex is 92% awesome.
The other 8% coincides with bad communication between partners, and partners who forgot the safe word.

I'm honestly not surprised. I can't even turn the radio to a popular station without hearing about someone's body, or the way they move on a pole, or what they feel like on top of me.

Good thread, I'm getting tired of hearing kids listening to gutter music. If I can have a dollar for every time I hear the "F" word in their music today I would be rich!

Our society has really taken the low road. With all the vulgar music, and reality shows that thrive on poor morals, hate, fighting, flaunting their sexuality, promiscuity, and the airing of peoples dirty laundry, has caused our young generation to become obsessed and imitate this poor moral conduct.

They're lacking scruples and respect for themselves and others around them. They have come accustomed to using the "F"word in public no matter if there are families or young children around. They use the "F" word without even realizing it.

Today hip hop music has really influenced a generation to glorifying thug life, disrespecting women, dis-respect for authority, and sex being an intramural sport.

Who cares? Sex is natural and pleasurable. It also is a hell of a lot better than songs about violence.

Why is sex and morality tied together? I don't get it

It's even more disturbing considering that the new rap/hip-hop/pop/dance/electronica/whateverthe****it'scalled genre is being fully embraced by pre-teens and teens all across America, and the only message is sex, and rebellion. Or that tv shows marketed to kids encourage sex, rebellion, deception, drugs, social status, and apathy. It's not by accident.

That's why I'm glad I listen to real music (metal) and not the mainstream crap.

I don't even like watching a movie claiming to be a comedy or something that revolves mainly around sex unless it's a porno. It's weird cause I'm apparently the least likely amongst my friends to be a prude according to them but it's still ridonkulous that sex is the basis of everything these days.

"Sex sells" is such a cop-out justification. LOTS of diverse things sell. If sex was the only thing that sold, "Angry Birds" would be "Angry Chicks" and they'd be thin and busty.

So then... what is wrong with these kids? Don't get me wrong; as a parent, I understand (and share) the concern over kids' exposure to these lyrics. The lyrics on the radio today are on par with stuff that 2Live Crew got banned for in the 80's.

At the same time though, I find it difficult to blame the music, seeing as how they've been singing about the same subject matters for decades. Granted the lyrics were a bit more subtle and poetic, but the subject matter was the same.

When I was in high school, I listened to Motley Crue, Guns N Roses, Poison, etc. but you wouldn't find me partying, doing drugs or treating women like sex objects, just cos that was what these bands sung about. Neither did my friends. So...when did people start using entertainment as some kind of morality compass? "Brainwashing" just doesn't cut it as an excuse for me. Where's the personal responsibility?
