It may be of interest that there was an attempt for a single European currency in1865. Admittedly the coins had fixed amounts of gold/silver, but it still failed with turbulent gold/silver prices and the onset of World War One.

It is noted that Greece were ejected early on for decreasing the amount of gold in their coins.
