It definately seems like tension is heating up between Turkey and Greece, and Israel by default. i saw on the news yesterday about Turkey invaded Helenistic air space (Greece) with 8 fighters and 2 planes that were "unarmed" which erupted into a dogfight with the Turkish warplanes retreating. All this at the same time that there is a U.S. warship, and Russian and Chinese warships in the area. Israel responded to this threat by stocking the Cyprus airbase with fighter planes.

Looks like Turkey is trying to push around the other kids on the block, and theyre finding out that their enemies are more than prepared to push back. All this over oil. In the name of peace it is best for each country to just leave the damned oil where it is and forget about it, but it wont happen.

There's alot of blustering and huffing and puffing going on. I wonder whose house is going to get blown in first? As an old story called the "3 little pigs" goes. Turkey says "little pigs little pigs, let me in!" I wonder which little pig will be the first to say "not by the hair on my chinny chin chin!", Israel or Greece?

I believe we shall find out in the ensuing weeks to come. Oil and natural gas are very good motivations for war as oil=money and natural gas=more money.

I bet the British GCHQ facility at Ayios Nikolaos Station (said to be part of Echelon) is having a field day listening in on all this.. It was reported (from the UKs Guardian Newspaper) that the station could hear a plane land in Beijing.. hmmm was that Bashar al-Assad flushing the toilet

The Islamist Turkey PM is a fool.

By all means, declare war on Israel. And the two quiet 5th coloum units will move in to seize power - secularist military officers that were casted aside still do weld influence and the freedom seeking Kurd rebels, silently waiting to pounce one the army looks the other way..

That idiotic attention whore of a PM may enjoy stoking the flames in our already stressed out world, but best he look under his own seat - its a powder keg in his own land that is he is sitting on, and non-turks dont even need to lift a finger to bother. He will stew in his own mess.

Before running the numbers through you battle calculators, why not consider the countries that could have Turkeys back. The PRC is the first to come to mind, while there are other possibilities too.

turkey is a NATO country so I doubt China would back them up. An attack on one nato country is considered an attack on ALL nato countries. Of course if Turkey attacks first who knows what would happen.

Amid the U.S.-Pakistan crisis, Saudi and Chinese intelligence officials arrived in Pakistan to hold talks with the ISI in a move aimed at countering the U.S. pressure on Pakistan.

The latest action was arguably Turkey’s joint air exercises with the Chinese Air Force last September. Chinese jets en route to Turkey refueled in Iran. The exercise was a clear signal that NATO member Turkey intends to exploit its alliance with the US to build ties with the US’s chief geostrategic competitor.

That's just from a few seconds of researching the strengthening ties between the PRC and Turkey. There is plenty more to be found on the web alluding to a great cooperation between the two countries.

Must not be that big of a deal...nothing in the MSM about it today. In fact nothing on Israeli news sites either (Haaretz and JPOST) or DEBKA for that matter.

Pretty sure this thread is muchado about nothing. Yes tensions are high in the area due to drilling but if a dogfight broke out between warplanes over there we would ALL be hearing about it.

A war is the last thing Greece need right now! For Greece's sake, I hope Turkey don't attack them. Christ, do you think Greece could afford it?

Well its not that I'm worrying, just stating this could screw greece up even more than it is. War could break out at anytime.

France could decide to attack UK if they wanted to, which they wont.

Thing's aren't really escalating between Greece and Turkey.
This is the first such incident for months now. What it is, is perhaps things going back to how they used to be.
Turkish violations of Greek air space were a weekly if not almost daily thing along with intercepts by the Greek air force of the intruding aircraft.
One of the aims of the Turks, when they send an RF4 escorted by F16's, is to try and locate the S300 air defence systems.
What the Turks are doing, is basically an act of war according to International Law.

Turkey certainly is trying to push everyone else around.
They've been trying to do it with Greece for years. But Greece won't go to war unless declared upon first.
Now the Turks are biting off a little more then they can chew I think.
They've pushed Greece-Cyprus and Israel together. This is extremely bad news.
I don't think military planners in Turkey will be able to counter that alliance. They simply don't have the assets to do it.
So for that reason, I don't think they are pushing for a regional confrontation because they know they'd lose and lose badly.

There are no Israeli fighters in Cypriot or Greek air bases. There is an offer by Israel to send fighters to Cyprus to defend Cyprus' air space and the rig(obviously primarily the rig, but intruding aircraft will be seen as a threat to the rig), and a request by Israel to deploy a couple squadrons to Greece which Greece agreed to...this I believe has been leaked on purpose, and if it were to happen, would be in the event of being on the brink of war with Turkey.
Seems like a purposefully leaked confirmation of the reports that Israel and Greece signed more then a strategic partnership and other smaller side agreements, but went full on with a mutual defence agreement.
If it's true, Greece will honour such an agreement, and a lot of Israeli's I speak to say that there is no way that Israel wouldn't honour such an agreement as well.

Just more pieces of the grand puzzle.

I think the whole reason Israel wants to send squadrons to Greece is because they know Turkey will push them again and they want a reason to fire at them, since Turkey has been invading Israeli waters with flotillas and threatening to send warships ot escort them through Israeli waters as well as threatening the oil rig. Turkey doesn't see it coming but they are bout to get their teeth kicked in before much longer.

Well yes, basing F16's and F15's in Greece would give Israel another front to fight from and open up their options greatly. Those jets would be flying side by side with Greek F16's too. So it would change the game in any potential confrontation greatly, and dramatically swing things in Israels favor. Or Greece's, depending on who the confrontation is against with Turkey.

But what I think the main purpose currently is, is to send a strong message to Turkey not to do anything stupid because it will find it self in a world of hurt if it did.
