The Canary Islands Government has raised the alert level for the El Hierro volcano in the Canary Islands (Spain) to ‘Yellow’, the highest alert status since an unprecedented earthquake swarm commenced in mid-July.

Spanish seismologists, accompanied by the President of the Cabildo de El Hierro and the Minister of Security and Emergency Area, held a press conference on Sunday to reassure the 10,000 residents of the smallest of the Canary Islands that the raising of the alert level does not indicate that an eruption is imminent. They indicated, however, that the number of volcanic earthquakes detected beneath El Hierro continues to increase.

"Any eruption would form cones on the high zones of the island and lava flows which would flow to the sea, although they would do so at a speed that would be slow enough for the population to be evacuated. It is something that could happen in days, weeks or months," said Carracedo.
"It is the youngest of the Canary Islands," he explained. "There is a ball of magma which is rising to the surface and it is stationed at the limit of the earth's crust. At the moment we do not know if that ball of magna will break the crust and cause an eruption."

According to ElHierro.com: “Although over 200 years have elapsed since the last eruption, El Hierro has the largest number of volcanoes in the Canaries with over 500 open sky cones, another 300 covered by the most recent outflows, and some 70 caves and volcanic galleries, notably the Don Justo cave whose collection of channels surpasses 6km in length.” El Hierro is located south of Isla de la Palma (population 86,000), currently the most volcanically active of the Canary Islands. About a half a million years ago, the volcano, Taburiente, collapsed with a giant landslide, forming the Caldera de Taburiente. Since the Spanish occupation, there have been seven eruptions.

Rising Volcanic Activity Prompts Evacuations On El Hierro, The Canary Islands
Wed Sep 28, 10:59 am

At least 20 earthquakes, exceeding magnitude 3.0 on the Richter Scale, have been felt by local residents during the last 24 hours. The most recent earthquake, which measured 3.4 magnitude, was recorded just off the southern tip of the island at 07:04 am Wednesday.

Plans are also underway to evacuate more of the island’s 10,000 residents, according to Canarias7.es. The newspaper reported that two units of the Spanish military’s emergency intervention unit (EMU) will depart nearby island Tenerife this afternoon to assist in the possible evacuation of hundreds of El Hierro residents.

IGN Director, María José Blanco said that any eruption on El Hierro would most likely have a “low explosion value”. He added that an imminent eruption is unlikely. The evacuations are probably just a precaution rather than a threat of an imminent catastophe. Seismologists 'particularly in europe' are rather cautious at the moment, after seeing scientists in Italy put on trial for manslaughter

Well amount of pressure could be enormous there, there hasn't been any big quakes lately. Even though its far from plate boundary, its very volcanic zone. It wouldn't be surprise if whole El Hierro explodes, that island is dotted with small calderas, it is not just 1 volcano.

Its worrying as any major eruption could cause enough of a tremor to destabilise the side of the La Palma volcano and trigger a Tsunami. As per the link it isnt likely however you just never know these days.

Canary Islands after earthquake triggers volacano fears

POLICE have moved residents and tourists from houses at the foot of a volcano on Spain's Canary Islands after a growing series of earthquakes raised fears of an eruption.

With the Pico de Malpaso mountain spitting rocks intermittently and a growing rumbling underground, authorities made emergency preparations in case the volcano blows its top on the Atlantic island of El Hierro.

"I have never felt shaking like it," said Herminio Barrera, 25, a mechanic in the town of La Frontera.

A municipal official who asked not to be named told AFP that 53 residents and tourists had been evacuated to protect them from the occasional flying volcanic rock and the defence ministry said it was preparing emergency shelter for 2,000 people.

"I notice it especially at night. We can also hear a rumbling and sounds from deep down."

The list now says that there has been no seismic activity for more than 2 hours. Previously there were tremors every few minutes.

The calm before the storm perhaps?

I've been watching this situation for quite a while now but I am no expert on these things.

Noticed that there has been a massive build up of pressure overnight ....

Looks a little disturbing to say the least!

Anyone know what (if anything) this means?

You can see some hours missing from earthquakes on the list (IGN) sometimes, but I have been reading comments posted from residents in the area saying that they have been feeling quakes which have not been recorded...

Strange...
