Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Tripoli Military Council, issues warning after administration negotiations founder

Libya's Islamist groups "will not allow" secular politicians to exclude or marginalise them in the intensifying battle for power in the post-Gaddafi era, the country's most powerful Islamist leader has said.

"We must resist attempts by some Libyan politicians to exclude some of the participants in the revolution," Belhaj writes in the Guardian. "Their political myopia renders them unable to see the huge risks of such exclusion, or the serious ... reaction of the parties that are excluded."

Belhaj – who was transferred to Libya with the help of the CIA and MI6 to serve seven years in Gaddafi's most infamous prison – was the head of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, which fought in Afghanistan until abandoning its jihadi ideas and disbanding in 2009. It then became the Libyan Islamic Movement for Change.

Well there you have it, a Islamist leader within warns NTC give us power or else it just goes to show without Gaddafi Islamist will control Libya this just who else would steal 20,000 Shoulder-Fired Surface To Air Missiles? no other then the rebels,Islamists.

Things will get very grim in libya reallly soon.

What do you recommend? Not giving them a share of power?

Islamic fundamentalists are a large constituency in any Muslim country. If the country is a democratic one, this constituency needs to be represented in the constituent assembly. You cannot exclude them; first because it is undemocratic and repressive to do so, second because if you do you will end up with a revolt on your hands, complete with militant groups and suicide bombers.

The only democratic way to deal with Islamic fundamentalism in a Muslim-majority state is to ensure that there is always a majority of liberal and moderate Muslims to outvote the fundamentalists. The moment the state begins using repressive measures against fundamentalists, it starts to erode that majority. And of course, if the fundamentalists are in a majority then no-one can deny them the right to rule, as long as the rights of others are respected and protected.

Democracy and Islam can peacefully coexist, as they do in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Turkey and elsewhere. But fundamentalism of any kind – Christian as much as Islamist – is incompatible with democracy as well as with liberty. Something for Americans to bear in mind as the Christian right tightens its grip.

I am not sure people in this regions are ready for a truly democratic government, Gaddafi may have kept the true psychopaths in check, altough he was pretty islamist himself. Maybe the islamists could be weakened by establishing a moderate islamist party while outlawing the more extremist ideologies?
